I'm trying to register for distance programmes and need some advice here.
First, the University I want to go through requires that I take an honour's degree programme first, before moving onto a master's. I could try and go straight into the master's, if I went through a foreign university (by which I mean 'not South African'), but that increases the cost by about...W10 million a year. I like my money a lot.
Sooo, these are the options I'm looking at (honours):
English (language and lit) - I like writing and like the idea of being a professional academic, so this works BUT...half of the course-descriptions I've read sound exactly like what I've already studied. This course will last 2 years.
Media. The same reasons as above, but I haven't studied all of it. Problems are that I don't feel so safe with a future in media and it will also take 2 years to complete.
Theory of literature. Sounds smashing to me and I think it would be useful and applicable to studies of English language and lit. A bonus is that this programme will only take one year. I'm just not so sure how valuable such a degree would be in 1) the ESL community, and 2) for a future as a professor of...English literature or general literature, I guess.
TESOL. Obviously useful in the teaching market, but it would take two years to complete and then another two years for the master's. Only then would I be on a level to find decent jobs at universities...I think...
Teaching ESL/EFL, though, is far from a lifetime goal for me.
I'm thinking I want to do the Theory of Lit stream, but I don't know if it carries any weight in Korea and at most universities.
Thanks. Sorry for the ramble. |
