SEOUL, South Korea, Friday, Dec. 7 (AP) A Hong Kong-registered oil tanker was struck by another vessel in seas off South Koreas west coast on Friday and leaked about 15,000 tons of crude oil, an official with the Maritime and Fisheries Ministry said.
It was believed to be South Koreas largest offshore oil leak, according to the official, who spoke on customary condition of anonymity citing office policy.
The accident left three holes in the 146,000-ton tanker Hebbei Spirit. The leaked oil amounts to 110,000 barrels, the official said.
The tanker was at anchor about five miles off Mallipo beach, carrying about 260,000 tons of crude oil when it was hit, the official said.
The official could not give more details, including whether the leaking was still continuing or its possible impact on humans and or wildlife.

Stupid, stupid idiots.
Every time one of these accidents occurs it absolutely destroys the environment for years afterwards. Drowns every seal, bird, fish and lifeform it comes near.
There needs to be much bigger fines for these accidents. Sick and tired of hearing about them... |

Hebei Spirit is fitted with one hull, according to Lloyd's Register-Fairplay, which assigns ship-registration numbers. An international ban on such ships is due to start in 2010. Modern tankers are fitted with two hulls to cut the risk of an oil spill and are usually more expensive to hire.
South Korean oil companies are probably the world's "biggest users" of single-hull tankers, Per Mansson, a tanker broker at Nor Ocean Stockholm AB, said in an e-mailed note today. "This might change policies in Korea and that would be tremendous for the market." |

Darn.
I have explored the Korean eastern and southern coasts extensively as well as countless islands but I had only been to a half dozen places on the west coast and all in the Jeolla provinces.
I had inked in a trip to Daejon and to the Taean peninsula next spring including that beach.

The whistle can be heard while one is dreaming. The sea gulls are singing at Mallipo. My love ~~These are the lyrics from Mallipo Love, a song sung by Park Gyeongwon. The younger generation these days does not know the song, but it was once very popular. The background of this song is Mallipo Beach, the largest beach of Taean. At the end of the shops, there is a monument honoring Mallipo
Love that inspires people to hum the song. Mallipo Beach opened in 1955. It is the most people to hum the song. Mallipo Beach opened in 1955. It is the most well known of the beaches in Taean-gun. Thick pine woods, silver sandy beaches shallow water It reminds you of the clean beaches on the east coast. Dig up a little sand, and water seeps out. With so much water, you can see sweet briers at Mallipo. The bottom is not steep, and the water temperature is high, making it a great beach |

This is awful!
I had no idea that oil tankers with just one hull were still in use. That's crazy.
I hope they are able to contain and clean the spill quickly. |
