A poster in another group was saying that he bought the following DVD player from Gmarket. He said that it played anything he could throw at it:

I checked the link and it looks awesome! It seems you can play multiple types of video files, DVD-Rs, mp3, photos, etc. It even has an SD card slot and USB input! So, I guess you could upload your shows onto an SD card or memory-stick and then pop it in this DVD player and watch on your TV.

Is this too good to be true? Has anyone tried one of these DVD players? I know DVD and SD tech is commoditized these days, but It's only 50K (refurb. for 39K)!

My local video store was knocking out Divx capable players for 50,000 awhile back.

I was pretty tempted. It would be awful nice to play the hundreds of .avi/divx discs that I have burned over the years on TV.

Even though this one you're linking is piss-poor quality, made-in-China-crap, it should still do what it says it does and maybe last a few years with care. For 50,000! Who cares?? Almost disposable.

The thing I would want it most for is playing .avi (xvid/divx,etc) movies from a 2GB SD card. I'm not sure if it can do that. Can anyone make out enough of the Korean?

I have something similar, no memory card slot but mine does have the usb port.

Mine is a cheap Chinese model, it works fine, plays everything but DVDRW. My memory stick and external HDD plug straight into it and them it's just a matter of going through the explorer like menu to start the file. Good for looking at pics too. It's so cheap you can't lose really.

Apex, a dvd player company, has given their players these capabilities for a while. When I was in the states they were all the rage.

Didn't they go out of business some years ago for not paying any royalties on patents and not paying the factory in China?

They were the most unreliable junk I have ever seen, (well, some Toshiba DVDs were apparently just as bad). I suggested a friend get one from Sears with the extended warranty; it lasted about three weeks. Evidently, it was a company with owners out to make a quick buck and skip town.

Does this one have WMA?

And while we're on the subject, what does "Does it blend?" mean?

there's no reason why a dvd player shouldn't be able to play all formats of video and audio.

the problem has always been companies crippling their software to prevent piracy and to support favoured systems ... most notably proprietary software like dvd encryption.

but since all dvds and cds are just data, they should be able to play any format, just like your computer. the only difference is that you can't download codec packs. but a dvd player is a computer ... albeit a limited one, so this is something of a natural progression really.

great to see these systems finally becoming common.

I've had this dvd player for 5 months now and it's great. I've had no problem paying dvds from the US, SE Asia, N Asia and Oceania. I have not used the memory card slot except for pictures. I have no idea about WMA... Sorry. The player was less than $50, so I'd say it's a winner!
