In Canada, I mostly used Callebaut chocolate for baking.
I don't know where to find bricks of good chocolate here, or what the cost is. If I bought in bulk in Canada (like say, 11lbs), it'd only cost me about 4$ per pound of 70% chocolate. I'd cut them into one pound blocks and freeze them until needed. If I bought them by one pound blocks, it'd be about 7$.
I had two pounds still in my freezer at home, and stupidly forgot them there.
Is there any Vahlrona or Callebaut, or other good (or at least decent -- no Baker's chocolate, please!) dark chocolate available at decent prices in Korea? Where is it? |

Just go to any supermarket and convenient store and look out for *Cacao* chocolate... 72% cocoa or 96% (or something ridiculously high like that) cocoa. |

I'd second the recommendation for the Cacao chocolate ... It is Korean but it really is good chocolate ... If you like good dark chocolate ... It doesn't come in the bulk amounts like you are talking about ... but I think it is good value as chocolate goes ... There are several different percentages of cocoa level available ... In the block chocolate it is on a similar level to Lindt (but a lot cheaper) ... It may be better chocolate than you are looking for ... but it is definitely a lot cheaper than ... and as good as imported chocolate of similar quality ...

Hannam Supermarket (basement of Volvo building) - the station after Itaewon (going east) exit 2, cross overpass (you'll see Harley-Davidson bldg.) turn right and it's about half a block.
They sell blocks of various types of cooking chocolate ... |

Sweet. I was hoping for chocolate in blocks. It gets stupidly expensive to buy the chocolate in bars when you use larger amounts.
Do you mean Noksapyeong station? |

Nope, it's Hangangjin Station. I think I might head to Hannam myself, it's about time to start making peanut butter fudge. Happy Baking! |

Just a warning. I was at hannam a little while ago and they didn't have baking chocolate or shortening. It was disheartening. |

Speaking of chocolate, what's the prophenynol (?) stuff put into chocolate bars being sold at supermarkets? I see it listed as an ingredient all the time. I'm looking for good hearty chocolate, not baking chocolate, although the two may be considered interchangeable. |

All the major Swiss chocolate brands (plus Hersheys) can be found at department stores, supermarkets and convenience stores around Seoul - and even in the rural area where I live. You can find varieties of fine chocolate even in the major book stores like Kyobo. It's really hard not to run into some after you've been here awhile... |

An update for other chocolate snobs/people who bake a ton.
I did find chocolate in bulk in Hannam supermarket. But even better.. I contacted an importer of Cacao Barry and Callebaut chocolate; they're called Jewon International. They import stuff that they sell in bulk (mostly, I'd imagine to bakeries and the like). They shipped me 5kg (11lbs) of chocolate... I ordered Cacao Barry's Origin Tanzanie couverture chocolate (75%). It cost around 75,000won total, so it worked out to a fair price at about 6,800won a pound. I think you can get them to send you only 1kg (2.2 lbs) if you use less.. but I'm storing it and keeping it.. it should last me until the end of my contract, unless I start making a lot of chocolatey things. The quality is worth it!
Also, some of the other chocolates are cheaper. If you only want their 55% Dark couverture or their 64% Extra-dark couverture chocolate it's even cheaper.
In case anyone else would be interested (especially good timing if anyone's doing some holiday baking), I thought I'd post about it. I transferred the money to them a couple of days ago and I got it already. Good service!

I'll check it out, but if it's really a huge slab for under 10k, I doubt it would be near as good quality. Do you know what kind of chocolate/its origin/its cocoa content? |
