My wife needs to change her tourist visa to dependant spouse. (I'm a foreigner.)
We didn't realize that her passport expires in the middle of next year.
She has nine weeks left on her current tourist visa.

Has anybody with a filipina/o spouse gone through the motions of getting a new passport in Korea while on a tourist visa?

If so, what did you do, and how long did it take?

Were there any special hoops to jump through?

Need to do this relatively soon as we have a trip to Canada planned in January.

Pm or here. Any information helpful.

Thanks.

It takes 2 - 5 WORKING days at the Phillipine embassy in Itaewon. It is located across the street from Noksapyeong station (the one between Itaewon and Samgakji in case my spelling is wrong).

Go to the counter.
Ask for the application form.
Take her passport and other supporting documents (along with 2-3 COPIES of each). I can't remember if we needed a copy of her NBI report or not.
Fill in the application and pay the fees (about 120k won I think - but may be mistaken).

There is a Philipino store behind the embassy if you need to make extra copies of anything. They also do passport photos if you need some new ones.

As a side note, does she have her Canadian TRV yet? They may require her to have her F3 BEFORE they grant a TRV for Canada. They did for my wife. They questioned why she wasn't applying for her PR/spousal visa to Canada instead of the TRV.

The F3 process can be done in an hour or so if you have all the documents handy.

TRV? Is that 'TRavel Visa'? Had not though a whit beyond the immediate need for her F-3.

Do you remember what supporting documents they required? I believe she has the standard stuff, like passport, marriage contract, postal ID, and police clearance (I think). I know in the PI, they require that you get a new copy of your birth certificate every time you do something. The original isn't good enough. Strange but true.

Crap, gotta head to class....

Have you found it easier applying for a visa in Korea to go to your home country compared to the Philipines?

Been wondering if I should apply for the missus's UK visitor visa here in Korea or in Thailand (all her property deeds, land deeds etc are in Thai)

Visitor (Temporary Resident) Visas
http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/world/embassies/korea/visitorvisas-en.asp

Instructions for Temporary Resident Visa Applicants
Step 1. Download an application kit from:

- Canadian Embassy website http://www.korea.gc.ca
- application - http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/forms/IMM5257B.PDF
- Citizenship and Immigration Canada website http://www.cic.gc.ca

Step 2. Gather all required documents.

- All required documents should be issued within 1 month of applying for a Temporary Resident Visa.

Step 3. Submit your application:

- Use drop box in the reception area of the Embassy or by mail.
- Incomplete applications may result in refusal.
- The application form (IMM5257) should be filled out carefully and signed by the applicant. If an applicant has knowingly submitted false information, the application will be refused.
- Original documents submitted with the application will not be returned. It will be kept in your file.
- Please fill out the application form and a courier slip with all available phone numbers and address of applicant.

Processing Times

The majority of our TRV applications take between 3 to 10 days to be processed. For detailed information on the length of time it takes to finalize a TRV application please go to http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/international/13-temp-visitors.asp

How to receive your Temporary Resident Visa

Your passport and visa will be sent to you by collect courier. A courier slip should be submitted with the application. If your application is refused, the passport will be returned with a refusal letter by courier as well.

YOU ARE REQUIRED TO SUBMIT ALL OF THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS. THE CHECKLIST SHOULD BE COMPLETED AND ATTACHED TO THE TOP OF APPLICATION.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED:

* You have to submit your original valid passport for yourself and all accompanying dependants with your application for a temporary resident visa.
* Two (2) passport size photos of yourself and all accompanying dependants
* Completed and signed application form (complete in English or French). Please include a phone number and mailing address in Korea.
* Original payment receipt of processing fee: Please refer to information regarding visa processing fees on our web site.
* A detailed itinerary, including dates and locations.
* A letter of invitation, if applicable.
* Proof of funds available to support yourself and dependants during your visit.
* Proof of immigration status in your country of residence.
* Employment letter or proof of enrolment if a student.
* Courier Service Slip (from the counter at the embassy).

The process will require at least 2 and probably 3 visits to the embassy and a wait of 4-10 days AFTER you drop everything in the drop box.

The Canadian embassy is about as useless as you can get when it comes to getting accurate information or application specific help.

Pay your money and drop off your application.
They will look at it.
If they want something else, they will send it all back to you via Courier at your expense with a letter asking for the new document.
You will submit it all again.
They will look at it.
If they want something else, they will send it all back to you via Courier at your expense with a letter asking for the new document.
Repeat a few times and then they may give it to you.

The staff at the visa section are about as helpful and as useful as t1ts on a bull. The staff at the Philippine embassy will seem polite, helpful and efficient by comparason (and we both know what Philippine government workers are like).

Good luck to you and get on it soon.

Ok, update. Went into the embassy at the bottom of Itaewon Ro at 1pm on Wednesday. Filled out the form for the passport and an embassy ID, and asked if they could mail the passport to us as we lived 5 hours away. He told us to come back at 4 pm. We had everything at 4:15. Great experience.
Went to immigration in Seoul yesterday. They were helpful and relatively speedy until they realized I was in the wrong jurisdiction. Had to go to Daegu. Went there today. In and out in 25 minutes. Daegu office is being renovated. Go to the 3rd floor.
Will do the Canadian part of the process in early January when I next have time off.
