Hi
Just wanting to pick the brains of all of you who have been here for over a year, who have experience of camps.
My school wants me to do camp everyday that school is not on (this is over 5 weeks) is this normal? Thought happily I only have to be in for half days...
Also can anyone give me an idea of what a day of camp is like? in terms of activites etc?
My advanced class had 15 kids in it, and I only ever see 2 or 3 of them at a time... is camp the same (voluntary) ? Could I end up having no students come in?
Are there any good websites with ideas for things to do? Ive asked my co teacher and she has no clue... :S Does anyone know if its structured or just all fun and games? |

i honestly would protest about the 5wks thing... say something to your co-teacher like "i understand, but i think i will be very tired and it will be hard for me to do a good job." usually people teach 2-3weeks of camp during the summer and winter periods. sometimes your school will pay u extra for a camp, sometimes they won't: depends entirely on your school. if your camp is a sleep-away one, u should get extra money.
as for half days, don't count on it. some schools will let u go home early, but some will insist on u staying for the entire day.

at the middle school level, it tends to be mostly games and activities, English skits, culture lessons, etc. my camps are usually 9-12:30 M-F with one group of kids, and i give 10m breaks every hour or so. i've never taught HS, so i don't know how educational the lessons there should be

kids are usually made by their parents during the vacation period, because the parents need to work all day. some kids are actually interested and will come every day. i would be surprised if no kids showed up. my camp sizes range from 13-20 students.

i'd ask your co-teacher about the structure of it. she'll probably be vague, but u might get something out of it. u do have to hand in your teaching plan, all your hand-outs and attendance sheets when camp is up, so it does have to be structured to a point.
as for websites, try:
http://bogglesworldesl.com/
http://www.esnips.com/user/gepikteacher
http://www.edochan.com/teaching/monkeys.htm
and dave's has some good ideas of games/activities |

Just for you... (from the Ministry of Education contract in the province where I work)
"During the summer and winter break, Employee may be asked to participate in special classes or English camps, up to 20 hours per week. Such special classes will not occupy more than 40 hours during the winter or summer breaks." |

But, they can arrange the summer camp this way: one hour of summer camp class per day. That's 5 hours for one week. So it could last 4 weeks without going over that. |

It's not kosher to use quote marks unless you're giving a direct quote. That's why I pulled the contract out and looked it up. |

am i the only one who understands "do whatever you want" to mean "prepare 20 hours of teaching material per week"?
this is NOT something i intend to do... is this the only class in the history of the world without a textbook? what are you planning to teach for winter camp? |

luckily for me, i will only have 1 camp and probably 1 set of forced extra class (which they insist on calling extra class, not camp) during the winter break. since i'll have two different groups of kids, my 20hrs of material isn't per week, it's per vacation period (i just use the same lesson plans for the next (new) group of kids...).
if u have different kids each week, i suggest u go that route. it means u can put more effort into your plans, and it's easier. at my school it's pretty much like babysitting, the kids want to be there perhaps even less than me, so i try and make it fun with short lessons, games, independent board games or activities, and yes, a movie on the last day. |
