Koreans see corruption worsening

Forty-five percent of South Koreans predicted that corruption would worsen in next three years, a global survey showed Friday.
Transparency International, a Berlin-based nongovernmental anticorruption body, has released the Global Corruption Barometer every year since 2003, estimating countries in terms of the degree to which corruption is perceived by the public to exist in society.

The South Korean barometer reflected the findings of a survey of 1,001 people.

It showed that 33 percent of Koreans expect corruption would be reduced in next three years while 45 percent responded the opposite. The figures in 2005 were 22 percent and 32 percent, respectively.

According to the survey, 67 percent of Koreans have cast doubt on the government's commitment to tackle corruption and improve transparency,

Only 24 percent regarded the South Korean government's performance in the fight against corruption is adequate.

It was lower than the average percentage of 54 percent among 63,199 people in the 60 countries, who tend be more positive about their government's attempts to stem corruption.

South Koreans' perception remained that political parties are most corrupt, followed by business and the police.

The political sector scored 4.2 on the scale, 1 meaning not at all corrupt and 5, extremely corrupt. The world average was 4.

On the other hand, only one percent in South Korea responded that they have had to pay bribes in their dealings during the past 12 months with public sector agencies, including the police, health services, education and so forth.

South Korea was among the countries least affected by bribery, which also included Canada and Switzerland.
