If you scroll down a bit more in the travel section to page 2 you can find a lot of info for India. |

I just went.
I suggest checking out indiamike.com. It's a really really helpful forum! |

Its going to be the best thing you'll ever do, its the most difficult but the most rewarding country i have ever been to.
Depends where your flying into but heres some ideas.
1st buy the lonely planet its your bible!!!!!!!!
flying into calcutta, you can take a train across country, stoping at Bodgahya to see Buddas birth place, then onto Varanassi and check out the Ghats and the Ganges river, and then onto Delhi and Agra-Taj Mahal.
Once in Delhi you have many options North, take a train to Kalaka junction and change onto a narrow gage train, take it up through the lower himalayas very beautiful! to Shimla, then onto Manali! if your really want adventure go to Leh in Laddak! and do some treking.
East from Delhi go to Ragastan, go to Udipor and see the Lake very beautiful, then off to Jaslimeire in the Great Thar Desert between India and Pakistan.
South go to Bombay, big city amazing people, then onto goa and the chilled beach scean, hit the back waters of Kerila and get lost in the maze of rivers.
Each of these are about three weeks each, if this is your first time to india you need to think carefully about what you really like and want to do.
I chose the eastern and northern routes first but i love the mountains.
Think about this its important to get it right first time around!
There are many more options to do, thats only a few.
Good luck and Gods speed, you'll need it! |

I have been twice, though the last trip was a few years ago. I prefer not to spend all of my holiday looking out of windows of some kind of transport.
I would recommend you choose one place, and take your time seeing it. I met a number of people "doing India" in a few weeks. Most of their trip was sitting on a train or a bus.

I agree with you, but India is so large and diverse! It's hard not to travel around...but if you do, you can take some cheap flights from city to city for about $40 USD !
Fast, cheap and easy. Check the domestic flights or ask the travel agents. I went from Delhi to Bangalore to Mumbai for about $30 on a domestic prop flight each way. Saves time. |
