The other day i was at a subway station, and I was approaching the turnstiles. I pulled out my wallet and 2x 500 won went flying out. I specifically remember having exactly that many coins in my pocket.

Some old lady was standing there so she bent down to pick one up. I picked up the other one. Then she turned around and said 'Give it to me', in less than polite words. I said 'that's mine, give it to me', but she responded with 'No, it's mine. Give it to me.' I said 'I had 2 coins in my pocket', and showed her my empty pocket. She insisted it was hers. I called her a few choice words and walked away.

1 of 2 things:

1. She is so poor, she needs to steal 500 won off of a foreigner. or..

2. She is too stubborn and blind to see she was wrong.

More than likely, #2

Punch her in the face? That's harsh dude.

How about break her fingers and set her on fire? Watching her put out the flames has got to be worth a laugh...

Slap OUCH! Slap OUCH! Slap OUCH!

Well a better idea would have ben to take her picture with my cell phone and put her on the 'net as 'coin thief'.

If I wanted the money so badly, I could have grabbed it out of her hand by force, but how does that look to bystanders? A bully violent foreigner who smokes pot and uses fake degrees as rolling paper assaults poor innocent Korean grandmother.

She whips out her cell phone calls the cops and you're arrested for stealing from an old lady and you're sharing a cell with the Metropolitician.

Old women in this country are almost as untouchable by the law as chaebol CEOs.

Some kind of finders keepers law we're not aware of maybe?

Or more likely unspoken that only applies to 아주마s.

Flick the other coin up in the air and give her a look of contempt as she scurries after it.

Well I can't very well wrestle a coin out of an old lady's hand without getting a beating from the locals, can I?

Wierd.

I had the exact same thing happen today.

I opened my wallet and out droped two 100w coins. The person next to me was also opening theirs at the same moment and assumed one of the coins was theirs, bent down to pick it up.

However I had seen them both fly out of mine, so I grabbed it and insisted "its mine". She gave a scowl like I was some sort of thief and went off. Nomally I wouldn't have bothered, but I had exacly the right change for a coke. If I'd let her take it i would have had to break open a 10.000. Wink
