I am thinking about renewing my contract. However, I don't really need to go back home right now. Can I insist on money in lieu of the ticket.
What do you guys do when you renew a contract. Do you all go back home for a vacation? |

Is there a clause in your contract that gives you the option of money in lieu of the ticket upon completion of the contract?

I think it depends on the contract. I know that if you re-sign with GEPIK and you stay at the same school then you can get cash in lieu of the plane ticket.

It really depends on who you are working for.
With a public school you get 2 weeks for a home leave + your return tioket paid for.
If you are at a hakwon, it is negotiable. Some contracts state that they will only pay for your flight (or airfare) at the end of your employment. If that is the case, then say you are finished at the end of your contract AND you will return to Korea 2 weeks later.
If they are interested in hiring you at that time then they can negotiate airfare, etc.
It all depends on your negotiating skills. If you hold the line you will get it. If you cave, you get zip.

Yup.
I negotiated a month off with my apartment remaining mine only during that month*, instead of the flight home.
*They originally wanted to put a new teacher in here while I was gone and I was like "Someone I don't know using my stuff and sleeping in my bed? No fucking way" |
