As I have read many different threads about foreigner bashing by the Korean media - recently and in the past - it is obvious that we lack any voice (accept here and some blogs) to give any rebuttle or perspective.
What I have seen from postings is that the Korean media goes out with their camera to certain night spot areas and try to film foreigners in a negative light. Then, that view is projected into the living rooms of Korea and we are all then painted as drunken, korean women chasing foreigners.
Then we have the situation where a group of stupid foreigners get caught with Mary Jane. This is happily displayed on TV and then we have a police offical come out and say that all foreigners are drug users (sorry, can't remember the exact quote but it was along those lines). And of course, we all have Aids.
So it dawned on me (and I don't know if this has been done before) that someone - sorry I don't have any of the equipment necessary or the technological know how - uses their camera to post the mirad of life in Korea on Youtube.
For example, the new E2 visa regs state that we are to be tested for alchoholism. We have all sidestepped the colorful markings on the sidewalks in the morning. Why not show that side of Korea over the internet.
How about the thread of wife/girlfriend bashing. That's a side of Korea that is not often discussed about outside this site.
Things like Koreans driving style - now that would be an eye opener for those who have not visited this great city.
These are just a few ideas that come to mind. I don't know how it would be recieved by Koreans but it would put things into perspective. A sense of fighting back, you might say. It just seems that from the issues raised on this site, most feel volneerable with little or no power to defend them/ourselves. This may be a little way in we can fight back to the negativity that is placed on us.
Korean Sparkling? Like I said, it is putting things into perspective and also giving certain elements of Korea a taste of their own medicine. |
