I went to the consulate in Toronto with my notorized degree and criminal check today and was kindly told that the criminal check I had was useless. Mind you, this is the same kind of check that "real" teachers in Canada use but that is besides the point. My school never really specified which kind of check to get so I figured this one I got would be best. WRONG! They told me, at the consulate, that I have to ask for the criminal background check that spefically deals with "people being employed and/or volunteering with the vulnerable", also known as the Vulnerable Persons Check or Police Reference Program Check (in Toronto anyway...) So I spent money on ordering this "wrong" check and also spent money on having this wrong check notorized. The only good thing is that I have to walk a few blocks to get to the Korean consulate, I wouldn't want to be the person that came all the way from Winnipeg only to be told they have the wrong paper. I asked the woman at the conuslate if she could show me exactly what they want. She showed me what is required of people in Manitoba but had nothing for Ontario residents (the consulate is in Toronto, this too confused me) I am going to Police HQ tomorrow to try and figure out what this check is exactly and if I am even eligable for it.
FUN!!! Very Happy

I don't know if you've ever been to Korea or dealt with Koreans before. If one official tells you something you don't like, politely smile and nod and then go back to the end of the line and wait for another window to open. The next guy/lady will probably tell you something different and hopefully that will suit your needs much better. Most of them don't know the rules themselves or are too 'distracted' to bother to look them up. And god forbid they lose face by asking for help.
