This past summer I was required to sit in the office until 5pm, even though my summer camp classes finished at 12. I never complained about this, as I know that it's written in my contract. About a month ago I asked my co-teacher if I could leave after the classes finish during the winter camp, but was told that I would have to wait and see. Well, my co-teacher is planning the winter camp dates now and I was told that if I finish at noon then I will have to stay until 5 again.
Is there anything that I can do that might get my vice-principal/principal to change their minds and let me go home early, rather than freeze my butt off in the office for 5 hours a day?

Dec. 31st, Jan 2-4th for planning, with camp running from Jan. 7-18th (9-12 with 1st grade, 2-3:30 for 2nd grade).
or
Dec 31-Jan. 11 (1st grade) and Jan. 14-18 (2nd grade) from 9-12 each day.
I was told however that if I choose to work from 9-12, that I probably won't be able to leave early. Is there anything that I can do that might get my vice-principal/principal to change their minds and let me go home early, rather than freeze my butt off in the office for 5 hours a day? |
i don't have a solution to your problem, but i know what makes me feel better when i stay here all day alone... insist they turn on the heating, then BLAST it all day long (even when you're in another classroom teaching). i'm talking tank-top/t-shirt weather.
maybe after getting the bill, they'll decide that the next foreigner will never stay all day and waste the heat!
sadly, it honestly does make me feel better.... |

| I got out of having to stay by claiming that I need a hot lunch everyday, so if they can't give me one at the school (which they can't if I"m the only one here) then I will have to go home so I can cook something for myself, so that I can stay healthy. |

that's a really good idea, maybe custom can try it. i would but there's always 2 teachers here during the break and they order in stuff at lunch 
although i do complain about staying all day long during break, it's way better than during the semester. i've got the whole office to myself, i bring a pillow, crank the heat, watch movies on the big screen in the English zone, use their phone... and did i mention, surf dave's endlessly? |

Well, since I haven't eaten a school lunch in 3 months and go out to eat every day, I doubt that idea would work.
I'm expecting to stay.
The thing that really annoys me however is the fact that I was told that the GEPIK contract was non-negotiable, only to find out later that it's up to each school's discretion whether or not they are willing to change things like vacation days, camp hours, housing deposits, etc.

My GEPIK contract recognizes the difference between semester time and vacation time by stating that I work 20 hours a week max during vacation time.
This equates to 4 hours per day, and I can't see how they can make me work 8 hours a day like during semester time.
Last camp, they never tried and let me go if I had finished preping for the next day. I always had to spend a few hours as I had no time to do prep till the day before camp.
(This winter, I am doing all the on empty days in school enabling me to leave smartish after a possibly stressful day.)
Last camp, they would order in food, highlight of the day it seems, which may take most of 1 hour to cook and eat. This left me stressed for preping for the after lunch class I had agreed to, everyone else just pottered about for a bit.
If the contract stipulates that you are there from blahblah to blahblah, then you should stay.
If contract says 4 hours a day, then you can interpret 4 hours a day and negotiate. |

You have the old GEPIK contract. I signed this one originally but the part about working only 40 hours total during camp was removed and changed to 20 hours a week during the break |

No, I have the one stating 20 hours a week during the break.
It says that normal hours are from 8.30 to 4.30, but break is not normal.
This time I told them that I would do 4 hours a day, no problem.
Last time VP said I could leave after prepped for the next day, this was related to me by the music teacher, but not in a song.
EDIT : 20 a week = 4 a day (8.30-12.30), or 8 a day x 2.5. |
