|
|
Trying to enter a club with my mate tonite I was taken aback when the doorman said "Korean people only". Exqueeze me?
Me: But i am Korean, I live in Incheon.
Bouncer: Sorry but no offence.
Me: But why Koreans only? Korean and waegukin together, OK? Why only koreans?
Bouncer: Sorry..we like you, good luck, sorry, Korea only.
Me: In London koreans can go anywhwere they want, any club. there are no "No koreans" signs anywhere. Why here, you do this s*it?"
Bouncer: English no.
me: You know, this is a racist f***ing club, wae??
Bouncer: me no speak english....
me: whatever....whatever..
I mean, what possible reason can there be for denying foreigners entrance to a club, other than to stop us geting with their women? What other possible reason, because westerners don't cause a lot of problems/violence/ whatever when they go out here...
*Wrong.
Fortunately there are plenty other clubs that do serve foreigners. But they all should. |

It's worse in Japan (hotels, bathhouses, bars, restaurants, apartments, etc)...but I'm not surprised about it here |

Just vote with your feet and wallet. If they don't want my money, I won't spend it there. Plenty of other places that will take it. You know how peculiar some of the locals are, deal with it. |

I'm not a big frequenter of Itaewon (read: "never"), but I believe there are "no Koreans" clubs there also.

I think the 'non Korean' clubs in Itaewon are only 'non Korean guys', I heard it was down to the behaviour of some ajoshis who would go into bars and cause lots of problems with fighting, I guess it's why some of the clubs in Hongdae dont let military types in because they have had lots of problems in the past.
It's not cool, most Koreans behave very well in Itaewon and the majority of GI types are cool. Unfortunately the idiots whether Korean or Gi cause the well behaved majority to be discriminated against. It's not fair but this is a reality in Korea.
If I ran a business I'd let everyone in and just have a 'no violent drunken idiots sign' if they misbehaved they would be refused service but otherwise all would be welcome.
Koreans seem very happy to discriminate against foreigners here, sometimes we get special treatment and other times bad treatment, I for one have had more positive treatment than negative for being a whitey in Korea. |

I went to a Korean-only club once.. they kicked me out.
Realistically though.. those places really suck! - if they had let you in, you'd have wished they hadn't. |

It only proves once more how racists the majority of koreans are. Yes..I said majority. Anyone living in korea and dealing with koreans on a daily basis knows this too well.
And for those of you who are defenders...and are not korean and enjoy koreans, know the language and get along real well with koreans...try entering one of the many places that are anti-foreigner! You won't get in. Not that you'd want to....just trying to make a point.
Koreans are becoming more xenophobic and nationalistic. Korean society makes a sharp distinction between an individual's inner circle of family, friends, business colleagues, and foreigners. Korean society is not egalitarian: a person's status is strictly defined in relation to others. How do foreigners fit into this scheme? The simple answer is they don't and never will no matter how buddy buddy you are with them. And again, not all, but most. |

The point is not whether the clubs suck or not...the point is that we are not allowed access based on the fact that we aren't of the "pure blood". Of course, the defenders of Korea will say that Korea is not racist. However, try walking around with a Korean girl and seeing all the glares and stares that you get. You can tangibly feel it. If you can't feel it, you obviously have a big, gaping hole in your head. I like Korea but I also acknowledge that the place has some big time issues. |

ah..yeah..slightly drunk post there.
But still, its hard to swallow up front discrimination thrown at you. To be honest I would agree with Tiger beer that Korean only clubs do suck, and I wasn't that majorly enthusiastic about going in anyway.
Perhaps they are worried about having problems if G.I's get in there and fight or whatever... being unable to prosecute a G.I for some offence, and so on.
It may make business sense to them, but still grates to hear the blatant "No foreigners" policy. |

I agree. In fact these days that's one of the few ways we actually DO vote. Yeppers.

Yeah from what I've heard many places in Japan don't admit foreigners so that means Koreans, too. |
