If you live or work near or at a university you have probably seen them on any given night on a weekend. A cloud of about 20-100 hooting youths riding together through the main thoroughfares of most university neighborhoods. All male, young guys, riding together with the deafening chorus of Hyeosung motorcycles mixed with the thudding techno beats of an monolithic amplifier / speakerbox sitting on top of their gas tank and being held in place between their thighs. And amongst all this, several of the motorcycles boast a colorful display of flashing bright glo-stick lights attached to their spokes to give the effect that their wheels are "on fire"; ready to "burn up" the road. Bright blues, yellows and oranges display prominently and with all of the hooting, the thunderous chorale of Hyeosung engines and techno beats they move forth with no speed limit, like a glowing pyroclastic surge cloud overtaking the main drag and everything in it. Most of them ride alone, although none but few of them are being squeezed by a helmeted, petite hottie sitting behind them, just enjoying the thrill.

Today one of my students briefly talked about this phenomenon. Are these motorcycle kids truly a bunch of ne'er-do-wells (like the Hell's Angels of ill-repute), or are they more like a motorcycle club, perhaps not much different from the charity rides we might see a group of Harley-Davidson wielding, beer-bellied, leather-clad, hirsute 50-somethings just having a good old time)?

When I first saw this, I felt speechless. Should we worry? Smile

They do the same thing in the states (minus the techno musak). It's just a group fun thing.

I have yet to see anything like it where I am from in the U.S. The closest thing I have see are a lot of bearded middle aged dudes on Route 66.
