For some of you it might only be weeks or months away, for others it will be years and years...

When you finally leave Korea, what will be the most important reason?

When I left after two years it was " I've had a bit of fun/a nice experience and it is time to go home and get a job"

Now I need to reply in a new poll: "Why are you coming back?"

Husband, daughter and the best reason of all, my grandson! Venture to say though, I'll be venturing again in less than a year.

A mixture of

* I will have saved enough/lots of money - Time to go
* want to see other countries
* no longer really like Korea that much and I ALWAYS said that as soon as I started to dislike Korea, I'd leave at the earliest opportunity - don't wanna be one of those guys who's in Korea for years and years but hates it

and one more not in the options...

* want further quals back home

What the hell? Try to find a job in Canada that pays meaningfully more than minimum wage with your degree. I implore you. They don't exist.

Also, as much as I like Canada, it is almost as overhyped as people accuse Korea of being.

Actually I have many reasons why I will eventually leave. But I chose the most prominent.

I chose: Other job/career back home, disallusement (sp?) with Korea, with ESL, child's education, and other: My health. Oh yeah, the money one too.

Toronto is a pretty east place to find good work. I've never had a problem finding work, it's the cycle of the manufacturing industry that kills me.

Was making more in Canada working for TD than I do here. That was 6 years ago. During a 6 month hiatus from Korea about 3 years ago, I made more money laying hard wood floors than I do here. Worked independently. The job that I have lined up upon my return, will pay me far more than I'm making here. We're a bit worried about wifey finding a good job, though.

You come from the east coast, don't you? That would explain why you don't have a favorabe impression of Canadian employment.

Aside from employment, here are some other factors that make Canada better:

food
weather
leisure activities
variety (cars, people, buildings, entertainment and a million other things)
manners
family and friends (that's just for me)
better sports
better health care
space
better camping
better shopping
better beer (domestic and imported)
less nationalism (hard to believe, eh?)
brighter future
will be better for my daughter

Now, my list of why Korea is better:
better cell phones, computers, TVs etc.
finished.

Of course, some things on my list are debatable. But in the end, I'm right and those who disagree are wrong. Wink

i'll be leaving when the bank account hits the right amount ... which should be in about 12-14 months.

i put that as my reason, even though i'll be continuing to explore and teach in other ESL countries.

Wait wait... so you're saying that the two specialized, hard to get into, pricey for the consumer, businesses you worked for actually paid a lot more than the typical counter-monkey jobs to be found in the want ads?

Will wonders never cease?

Haha, that's what I was thinking. Yes, I am from the east, the dirty countryside east, but even in Halifax you had to have some kind of connection to get a job. I know far too many MA graduates working at convenience stores to think that anyone without family in the business could ever pull a decent job--unless you studied to be a nurse or a doctor, or some kind of other profession that is easily employable, even then it can be difficult.

I applied for a job at Scotiabank once (a lowly, entry level, customer service job that paid $14.50 an hour) and I got laughed out of the door. They wanted ten years experience. TEN YEARS. For $14.50! People fought for that job too, there were twenty people being interviewed for one position.

I'll tell ya a few reasons why Korea is better:

1. cheaper and better Internet. NOTHING in Canada comes close to comparing.
2. Overall cheaper standard of living - includes way cheaper taxes
3. Cheaper and BETTER dentists
4. Cheaper eye care, no dishing out extra money for eye exams
5. If you have money, better access to health care - In Canada in some cities you can't even get your own doctor.

I'll tell you why I think Canada is better (won't repeat what you have said):

1. Sports opportunities for GIRLS. Korea is SADLY lacking that. - you say better sports but don't expand. Some of us could think you just mean hockey and CFL Surprised

2. I speak English fluently, others are expected to speak English fluently: I have NO problems communicating. No cultural problems. In Korea, even if you speak Korean, there will always be cultural problems that arise, or people who can't grasp that a foreign is speaking Korean, and thus will ignore what you are saying. (if your French, substitute that for English)

3. Better educational system. Though this is debatable, at lease we don't beat our students, or make them stay at school until 10pm or midnight. Also, we teach critical thinking versus memorization. That makes it better in my eyes.

The one thing I'll disagree on: Canada has better food. We have cheaper fruit, but veggies are more expensive than Korea. We have more meat selection: especially for sandwiches. It doesn't make it better, just different and more varied. I actually like Korean food better than what I eat in Canada.

Would depend on many things, namely family situation and career opportunities.

I will certainly not engage in a Country X is better than Country Y because I find that type of debate/comparison to be useless and meaningless.
