That bad, huh? That's disappoint'n. I had high expectations with that movie as you usually can't go wrong with a Denzel movie. That's a shame. Where's my "Sound of Music" DVD.....

Are you seriously kidding????
That movie was one of the best movies I saw this year.
I actually stayed awake for the entire 2hrs and 50mins......which is more than I could say for Harry Potter (and for the record, I fell asleep during EVERY Harry Potter movie)

Awww...it was alright...but, really, how memorable was it? Well shot, well acted, but, in the end...so what? Aside from the 'getting your army cuz to help you smuggle' bit, it was entirely generic. Any two hours of 'the Wire' would be a better and more memorable and more original two hours spent, IMHO.
Not bad, but if that's the best Hollywood can do this year...well...f*** hollywood.
I liked 'rescue dawn' better, and i HATE jail movies.

I enjoyed it although the last 20-minutes was a bit silly when the 2 protagonists became all 'chummy'.

It's worth watching though.

I put it on when I was tired and reading a newspaper. The only scene that caught my eye at all was when one guy (with a gun to his head) pleads to Denzel, "You wouldn't shoot me in public, would you?", and our anti-hero immediately blows his head off without even slightly hesitating....

Maybe some day I'll watch it again, but it's not very high on my list of DVDs already bought but not really viewed yet...

I dunno, he's a bit hit and miss for me, and he's been in some godawful movies. Philadelphia for one.

THe movie was based on a true story!

its not the best that hollywood can do this year!
its what ridly did this year...

and if you ask me its an amazing film..
the cinematography, the art direction, all just amazing
ridly really does what he does best and creates a real mood and feeling of
the 70's...

someone said they liked RESCUE DAWN better.. two completly different movies.. with no similarities what so ever.. and the ending of dawn was cheesy at best..if we are talking bale movies.. then YUMA is better..

but gangster will be a contender for oscar! the film was EPIC!
and if you read up on Frank Lucas you will see ridly tried to keep to the truth as much as he could..so if you dont like the story well , thats how it went down cant do much about that...

Ridley turns out another glossy production house action flick.

Like Gladiator, This had the story and characters and settings to be a poetic, elgaic, epic cinematic vision along the lines of The godfather or Apocalypse Now. I sh^t you not.

But no, Ridley gives us some great scenes and then fills between them with cutaways and montage sequences.

Scorsese went the same way (props for The Departed however, but Aviator and Gangs were not what one expects from a Scorcese.)

Perhaps the big Hollywood Production companies are pulling the reigns a lot tighter these days...?

The movie was pretty good. Russell Crowe's new york/jersey detective character was dead-on. Great job for a kiwi!

oh come on, it fell very short short of epic. Just being longer than other action flicks doesn't make a film epic. Like his previous few efforts, it is a superior genre movie compared to the others being put out, but it is not an epic.
