After a 10 year search while only being able to purchase a poster of the film, "Saigon" also retitled to "Some May Live" , I have finally been able to purchase a copy on Ebay since there is no claim to the copyright anymore.
Nearly 20 years ago I saw the end of the film on AMC and have been searching for it ever since:
They were doing business in Hanoi in 1948 which was kind of interesting since that city and all of the north would be closed for several decades thereafter.
After World War II Larry learns that his flying buddy Mike will only live a short time despite the efforts of the doctors. He takes on a profitable flying job for profiteers Maris to finance a good time for his buddy. As the plane takes off he shoves Maris' secretary Susan on board. When Mike falls for her, Larry tells her to play along for Mike's sake. She, of course, falls for Larry. Written by Ed Stephan {[email protected]} |

You know of course that Alan Ladd was so short that he was seldom photographed in full because he was standing on a box. Veronica Lake, however, was pretty hot. |

Well, there really was no question of that. |

And they're together in The Blue Dahlia. Movies don't get much better than this.
And yes, Veronica Lake is HOT! |

Well, not a midget exactly. Maybe a munchkin's taller brother.
I don't remember where I read it. I do remember that the writer said the only reason Ladd was in the movies was because he was someone's brother-in-law. |

Sometimes Wiki is like a magic lamp:
"For a short time during the early 1940s, Lake was considered one of the most reliable box office draws in Hollywood and was also known for her onscreen pairings with actor Alan Ladd. At first, the couple was teamed together merely out of physical necessity: Alan Ladd was just 5 feet 5 inches (1.65 m) tall and the only actress then on the Paramount lot short enough to pair with him was Lake, who stood just 4 feet 11 inches (1.51 m). They made four films together."
BTW, both "So Proudly We Hail" (nurses at war in the Pacific) and "Sullivan's Travels" are excellent.
Also from Wiki: John L. Sullivan, a wealthy young Hollywood director, fresh off a string of very profitable, but shallow comedies... wants to direct a new and different kind of film entitled O Brother, Where Art Thou? which would give a serious depiction of the plight of the downtrodden. |

Alan Ladd was a short (5' 5"), unexpressive lead actor with icy good looks and a resonant voice. He worked a variety of odd jobs -- in addition to radio and in local theater -- before entering films in his late teens as a bit player and grip. In the mid-'30s, he began appearing regularly in minor screen roles. Hollywood agent Sue Carol discovered him and began trumpeting him as star material, and the actor eventually landed a major role in This Gun for Hire (1942) opposite Veronica Lake. He quickly became a major star, and was teamed with Lake in other films -- all hits. Ladd and Carol married in 1942, and she remained his agent for the rest of his life. On the Top Ten box-office attractions list in 1947, 1953, and 1954, he continued to star in films throughout the '50s, but -- with the exception of Shane (1953) -- few of his films were noteworthy; most were entertaining adventures featuring Ladd bare-chested and in fistfights, but, by the late '50s, their appeal was waning. Ladd was the father of actors Alan Ladd Jr. and David Ladd, and former child actress Alana Ladd. He died in 1964. ~ All Movie Guide
