|
|
I renewed my contract in the middle of september. At the time, I should have taken two weeks leave. I didn't. I asked my coteacher to make sure it was ok that I take it in January or February. He reported back that I would allowed 3 weeks since I was agreeing to not not take tiem off during the school year.
This morning during our weekly meeting he now has no recollection of saying anything like that.
Further, he insinuated that because I didn't use it then, I lost it.
For all you EPIK'ers out there. What was your experience or what did you hear, if anything, about taking the renewal home-leave at a time NOT during school?
And second. Does anyone know if EPIK will pay for unused vacation?
I was supposed to go home with family this break, but my thats not going to work out. |

In my experience, take the vacation or get everything in writing.
They have very short memory. |

I'm in a similar situation. I resigned but was moving to a new school.
Because of this they said I would not be able to take my full time off. I didn't want to rock the boat at the time. (not burn bridges, not be seen as difficult.)
Anyways. I brought it up with my co-teacher and she is petitioning for me to get some extra time off. I haven't heard an answer back, but since you had an agreement. I definately would press this issue. |

The number one reason for discontent is trusting that Korean admins are going to follow through with what they tell you. In four years, the occasions in which I got ripped out of money or time was when I trusted what someone said. I never agree to anything that isn't in writing, and I also, make sure that what is in writing is more than crystal clear, otherwise you will get bombed every time.
It is a fallacy to think for a minute that what something means today will mean the same thing tomorrow or the next day, not even considering a month or a year from now. It is so ingrained in Korean customs to change intent based on what is happening right now. I have lost more money and time than I'd prefer to think about, but to be sure, if you have found out the hard way as I have, learn your lesson so it doesn't happen again. |

ditto. i've started getting my vacation dates in writing, and good thing that i did. my co-teacher came up to me recently and tried to weasle me out of vacation days and the time i had requested and been given. now-a-days, i get everything in writing, and always carry a copy of my contract in my bag. just in case.
in your case, i would press the issue though. if you're firm enough and perhaps mention that u already bought your air tickets, it could work out still. |

Yeah, I hear what you're all saying, but my school has actually been exceptional about a lot of things.
A week or so ago, I needed to go to Seoul during exams to do embassy stuff...see other thread....and my co-teacher said it had to come out of vacation, while the principal said like a wiseguy, "Fughettaboutit."
I'm not looking for a labor board tiff or anything like that. Push comes to shove, I can move on, but my school doesn't want to lose me and I don't want to lose my school.
I'm asking anybody else who resigned with EPIK during the school year how the re-signing leave was dealt with of it wasn't takedn at teh tiem of resigning.
But thanks everyone else too..... |

Three weeks winter vacation plus the two weeks of home leave equals
five weeks.
Just leave for five weeks and then say you were sorry.
Of course you might try contacting your assistant coordinator and see
what he or she suggests. |
