While reading the "how professional are you thread," I though about this question.

I read a lot of schools like you to out line your teaching philosophy. What kind of teacher are you? How do you assess your teaching? How do you plan to improve your teaching skills?

Mine is 4 pages 1.5 line spacing 12 pt font with citations. But I haven't updated it in three years so it'll probably change if I ever look for a new job.

Mine is also pretty complex, but an over-simplification would be: everyone is capable of learning, and the teacher must do more than simply present content material.

A VERY over-simplified version, with lots of provisos, wheretos, therefores, and maybe a to-wit or two...in interviews, I have simply said, "Everyone can learn, and it is my job as teacher to facilitate that learning." Not saying it is a GOOD answer, just saying it was the answer I have given....

The general rule of thumb is 1-2 pages in length, much like a resume. Keep it brief and to the point; it's an overview, not a thesis or term paper. If the prospective employer wants more detail, that'll be covered during the interview process.

Rule of thumb over here is to keep all documents under a page, except CV's which can run 3 pages without the Korean audience drifting off. I'm not trying to be a d i c k, but do you really think any Koreans made it to page 4 of a 1.5 line-spaced essay on teaching philosophy?

I usually send them a message telling them I am the Zodiac Killer, usually using my own unique encryption system.

I find that this usually removes the offensive and troublesome meddlers from my worldview.

In all honesty, not goofing around. Jobs that ask for essays like that are always only trying to cut down the applicants to age and gender.

It is just a polite PC way of saying young females only. A recruiter told me that years ago and I think it is true. She pointed out the very real concept that they probably can't read the essay anyway.

Never fill out a form either. You are overqualified.

Forgiveness can be found in Church, not at school.

I tell them that my teaching philosophy will vary based on amount of money I'm paid. Razz
