so what Im planning to do is go to Vietnam and then look up tours there to go on. But lately Ive been getting a lot of you shouldnt do that since youre a female traveler and alone so I wanted to hear if anyone else (females) have traveled there alone and been perfectly safe.
The travel agent I bought my ticket from told me she went there alone, but it was only for 4 days. I will be there for 10 days.
What do you suggest? Should I just find a tour while I am outside of Vietnam first then? |

i wouldn't even do a tour, its a waste of money, u can do it all on you with a little planning even at the very last minute. I met girls who went there on there own with no problems. 10 days is short you'll probably want to just stick to the north or the south |

When I was travelling in China, I met tons of girls/women travelling alone who had come up through Vietnam or Laos.
First, and foremost, is to keep your wits about you.
Second, it's very easy to meet fellow travellers there to go visit some sites, go out for some nightlife, travel to the next place together etc.
Third, there are probably ppl on this board travelling there this winter (I know one cool person on here who is part of a large and nice group going there)
So, if you want travel partners make a post and maybe you can meet some cool people. |

You have to be careful about some of the foreigners you meet while travelling oversea's I met one lady who admitted she made her living of lost or stolen passports. Whatever you do always get your own hotel room and never leave your belongings with someone you just met. |

I travelled there alone and I had no problems. You'll meet lots of other travellers who you can hook up with for a couple of days if you want. Don't do a tour either, they are not worth it. Have a wonderful trip. Oh but be careful with passports, stuff like that. My buddy's was stolen. |

I went to Vietnam alone and had no problems. I've heard it's relatively common for people to drive by on motorcycles and steal stuff, though, so be careful about that.
oh, and all the hotels wanted to keep my passport while I stayed there. I always refused. If you refuse they'll make you pay when you check in. no big deal.
Three out of three tours I went on in SE Asia were bad experiences. I hate tours anyway, though, so I might not be the best person to comment. |

I almost always travel solo. My first international trip was in a non-English speaking country solo, shortly after 9/11. Everyone thought I was crazy. It was great.
Be smart, you'll be fine.
If you're going to Hanoi, I can recommend Hanoi Backpacker's Hostel. Good place, nice prices, they don't take your passport, etc. They also have female only rooms if that makes you more comfortable. I tend to dig the female only rooms because you can meet a lot of other women who are also traveling solo.
