|
|
For people that have been here a while, maybe you've heard Korean people say to you that you are becoming a Korean person. Maybe eating a bit of Kimchi triggered off the comment, maybe you said a decent couple of sentences in Korean. Maybe you, yourself, have subconsciously felt yourself becoming a bit more Korean in your actions or way of life.
So what signs are there that show people are becoming more Korean? Are you more Korean than when you first came here? |

I first came here five years ago and I still avoid squatters like the plague. Truly horrible things! |

My 닭갈비 아줌마 insists that I am a Korean because of the facts that I know all the local Korean hideouts and small temples, that I've been here for a couple years already, that I can converse with her in (limited) Korean, and that I eat at her restaurant regularly. Then again, maybe the fact that I have a 닭갈비 아줌마 itself says something. |

You point with your middle finger because pointing with your index finger is considered rude... the Koreans aound you are impressed and tell you that you are becoming Korean. |

I spit a lot.
I make strange noises when eating/streching/talking/showering.
I'm kinda sick of seeing all these white folk around.
Burping a lot more at dinner lately.
Honestly though, I notice I start to crave kimchi a little if I go more than 5 or 6 days without it. Damn you Yobo. |

I've become pushy when trying to get a seat somewhere.
I cut in front of students on the shuttle bus because I'm a "professor." (I use the term loosely)
I would rather eat Korean food than Western when going out.
I speed off with my MP3 player in my ears wherever I go.
I've started sleeping on public transport.
I never really did any of these things back home. |

I've undergone the most fundamental of changes towards becoming a Korean. I've changed the way I wipe my azz. Since coming here and becoming educated in the fine art of using Korean chopsticks, this fine motor skill has translated to my nether regions where I have shifted from the 'gouge' to the 'chopstick pinch'. The latter is much more efficient and life has been altered for the best. Thanks Korea |

- I leave the room to blow my nose (no spitting in public yet; maybe that's next?)
- even the thought of leaving my phone at home while at work instills me with panic
- I can shove with the best of ajummas
- I really feel I'm blending in when walking with a group of Koreans (only when I think about it do I realize how much I stand out)
- foreigners are all starting to look alike to me, and Koreans all look very, very different |

I'm always coughing and always spitting up stuff. I like to bump into people because I don't feel like moving out of the way. I am always in a hurry and say yeah yeah and ok! when I don't feel like listening to someone babble or when I just don't understand them. I eat almost as much kimchi as the amount of soju that I consume. I dance like a backstreet boy in the karaoke room while banging my tamberine. I am getting a motorcycle just so I can speed down small alleyways forcing pedestrians to get the hell out of my way. I enjoy all sorts of oddities when it comes to food including chicken feet. Ummm. Last but not least, if a foreigner tries to speak to me, I just say, "sorry, no English." Works like a charm.
jk, Korea is a cool place overall...just some funny stuff that I have noticed. |

When you pose for pictures in your home country and people there ask you if you are "part-Asian?" Before Korea, I was never asked this; after Korea, people ask me if I am part Asian. |
