Sorry for yet another Thailand question, but the info found via the seach option is several years old...I've never been to Thailand and I'll be travelling there for 3 weeks in Feb and will probably be on my own. I am a "mature" female and done my fair share of travelling about. My question is this... I want to visit 3-4 different places in Thailand and stay at each place for at least several days. I'd rather find several lovely spots and relax there than flit about for 3 weeks. I prefer non-touristy places, but also I don't want to be too isolated since I will be on my own. Ideally I want places on or quite near a beach (simple huts preferred), good diving/snorkling/swimming locations, off the beaten path but not too far, decent restaurants, and perhaps some low-key nightlife.. Since I've not been to Thailand, I feel quite overwhelmed with deciding where to go. Of course the internet sites describing places make them all look wonderful. So, if anyone could just suggest a place or two, I'd certainly appreciate it... Places akin to Alona Beach in the Philippines are my style... Thanks in advance y'all...

I always recommend munork resort.

Are you wanting the company of beach boys or not? If you want male company then the really touristy islands are where to go. I have heard that you can get the equivalent of a beach boy in Chiang Mai as well.

Ko Samet is pretty nice near Rayong or you could always go to the archipelagos around Ko Chang and stay at some of the quieter islands.

You are pretty safe there. There has been a noticeable rise in crime against foreigners but that is mainly in the tourist areas and normally Germans/Koreans/Middle Eastern men getting robbed by ladyboys in Pattaya.

However don't wear lots of gold on show and things will be fine.

You are looking at a day to travel anywhere.

Thanx mrs.squirrel for the info.. No, beach boys are not on my list of fun things to do, so I won't be seeking them out... A handsome scuba guide would suffice...I'll check out the spots you recommend!

Anymore suggestions are welcome here!!

^ Another place which is accesible is somewhere on the south west coast.

Can't remember the name - I'lll Google it later but there are a group of islands down that way that a friend who visited me there went to. Caught a cheap flight there and was impressed by the place.

Not Phuket way but southwest as southwest can be.

My favorite location is Krabbi. I think the beaches are way superior on the Indian Ocean side. Lots of great rugged coastal shores with white sand. I would station myself in Au Nang. In that way you have easy access to Phi Phi island and Phuket. Kho Lanta.

Sorry for yet another Thailand question

Hey,

I was just in Thailand all summer. Look, if you're going to a few beach places, you might want to come up North and see Pai. It's a quiet little town great for relaxing, with a little jazz club. You'll undoubtedly hear Pai is a great place to relax if you ask residents of Chiang Mai. You can fly directly to Chiang Mai then take a bus to Pai.

Just a hint, pai also means "go," so you want to elongate the place name when you ask for your bus ticket. If you're speaking Thai and you say "I want to go" to the ticket salesman, they will be like, "Thee-nai???"

Hey everyone who has responded so far.. Thanks so much! I was able to base much of my Philippines trip last year on the kind attention I got from posters here... If anyone else has ideas or "seconds" on the suggestions so far... I'd be much obliged! Cheers!

Other question to ask yourself is "Do you want to spend your time with the Great Unwashed or not?"

It's a big question for Thailand and the islands and beaches. The number of numpty backpackers wittering on about karma and how Buddhism is commercialised and they shouldn't have to pay for temple stays is rather wearing.

Also depends on the old finances. I've stayed in some very nice beach bungalow things on Ko Chang (Trat) at Coconut Beach (can't remember that Thai name for it - Between White Sands and Lonely Beach).
Nice big balcony, air con, maybe an outside shower (not 100% on that I get places mixed up) up on a hill overlooking the beach.

1200B a night. It was quiet. It was close enough to touristy areas if I needed to get my hair braided or buy a dodgy CD, yet it was up market enough to keep the GUW's away. Decent restaurant as well with soft shelled crab.

Nice beach, nicest on the island that is easily accessible.

A few hundred baht more a night can get you a nicer place and keep it a lot quieter.

Hey mrsquirrel.. Thanks for responding! "The Great Unwashed?" Let's just say I got over all that back when it wasn't cool anymore.. Anyway, I'd like a nice place to stay.. not fancy (don't need AC), but not backpacker style either. Wouldn't wanna to spend much more than $25 a night.. Is that unreasonable?

You're a peach for your kind attention!!
