Today I was informed that the college I work at will not be renewing my visa for next year. I was very surprised as I have been here for 2 years and always had a good relationship with everyone. When asked why, the head of my department told me that there is a new 2 year rule for all visiting and part-time professors in Korea. I was a bit skeptical about this, but after finding out the native Japanese professor was given the same info, I not sure what to believe. Anyone else hear about this rule?

Schools seem to make their own policy in these matters. Each school is different. Most schools say 5, but a some 3 years, others have no limit. This is first I have heard of 2 years, but it is up to each school how long they want their staff around.

I heard similar noises out my way, but no one has said that it's going to happen at my college. The two year rule is something that the college decided on, its reasoning is beyond me. The gov't doesn't really care about foreign teachers at the college level, and since we are contract workers, in effect part-time lecturers, there is no reason for the colleges to go one way or the other on the subject.

BTW, I am way past two years, and this is the not the first college I've stayed longer than two years at.

I believe it's a money issue. During the two years I didn't get a raise. Maybe there is some law that after 2 years the school must give the teacher a raise. I also wonder if it has something to do with increasing the pension contributions.

Rather than tell you they don't want to give you a raise, they spout some phantom "rule" about a two-year limit. They save face by blaming it on this "Korea-wide rule". See? It's not their fault they have to fire you.

Probelem with that is they are lying. There is no such rule.

the funny thing is that I probably would have re-signed for another year without the raise. I know it sucks not having a raise for 3 years, but everything else was good and my wife and I were settled here. Now the school has given my previous boss until Jan. 11th to find my replacement. Good Luck with that.

Time to move on, get a job back home teaching at a university. BTW, what were you making here? Can't be more, or even close to, what you'd be worth back home. I imagine that professors back in the west make much more.

If they ever come back to you because they can't fill the position in time, negotiate them into oblivion. If they balk even at one of your conditions, hang up.
