If you bank at Shinhan and they turn you down for a credit card, show them this ad. Ask them for the credit card they issued the whiteys in this ad. You think anyone in that picture would have a hope in hell of getting a credit card in Korea?

(For the record, I'm quite certain we've ruined it for ourselves. Too many ESL teachers skipping out on credit card debt. Heck, most of the Canadians I was transfered to Seattle with found it very hard to get American credit cards, even though they had upwards of $500,000 in their American bank!)

You have to be kidding me that it is difficult for Canadians with $500,000 in the bank to get a credit card in America. I used to sell em' like hotcakes to immigrants from latin America and Asian countries about 3 to 4 years ago while born American citizens interested rarely passed the test in the computer.

I am American and never could get one myself. They just turn you down. Back in 2000, I had a $60,000 a year job and couldn't buy a new pick up truck that would had paid me an extra $800 a month to use it for work instead of having a company truck. I would had to have a co-singer who had wealth and good credit which my parents didn't have. I had much more than any one in my family and was doing very well with just a 2 year degree until a few months after 9/11. Getting credit has to do with stable employment history and how the system perceives you to be stable and reliable where you don't just disappear or radically change income status over night like I do from time to time. Those who move a lot, travel, do military service, and experience unemployment are not considered to be credit worthy in the system while others who earn small money, but stay in the same place all their life tend to get credit.

Credit in Korea? Upon opening a bank account, I was offered a 1 million won credit card provided I deposit 1.3 million won to secure it. I declined as I have no need for a card here nor the incentive to build credit in the Korean system.

I kid you not. My friend opened an account at Wells Fargo, deposited about $500K he got from selling a bulk of his stock options (our software company was bought out by Seattle dot.com). He applied for a credit card. They approved one with a $500 limit. Not $5000. Five hundred. He was stunned. He called them. Clickty clickty. Oh. Oh. You do appear to have half a million. They sent a black towncar to pick him up, drive him to the bank, and issue him the proper card.

Yeah. In Canada I had the same problem. My bank wouldn't give me a credit card. But then another bank gave me one no problem. In Seattle, my own bank gave me a $500 limit sucker but then I applied via lendingtree.com and got flooded with preapproved $5000 limit cards.

I'm actually enjoying credit card free living. Not that I've had a bit problem at home. Always max payed my bill. I tended to treat it like a debit card without a service fee and gives you air miles.

Dunno what's wrong with you guys -- I always had credit card companies banging down my door, and whenever I did start to use one, the credit limit was never less than $5,000.

MM2:

Where ya been, bruddah? You can get a Visa card from the Korean Exchange Bank no sweat. Annual fee of 40,000 won, no monthly fee if paid on time, and no bank deposit transfer fees either. You earn points toward Star Alliance's growing network of air carriers, including Asiana, Cathay Pacific (based in Hong Kong) and Singapore Airlines, plus taxi and a myriad store discounts in Seoul.

And as long as you eat kimchi at least once a day, no one will ask questions. Wink

Koreans have skipped out on CC debts of $50,000 and up. So many in fact that they had to open up the "bad bank" to deal with so many delinquent accounts... and Korean banks are still handing out cards without checking who they are giving them to.

But an occasional whitey skips out on a couple hundred bucks, hell even a couple thousand, and we're all branded for life.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the actual number of foreigners skipping out on credit card debt in South Korea is zero. After all, it's a tad difficult to have credit card debt when the company won't issue you the card in the first place!

i don't get it! i've had Korean credit cards since i've arrived here years ago. they were easier to get here than to get back home...although that was easy, too.

what's the big deal? i didn't need any deposit or a bloated bank account (although i had one)!

now, i get endless email come-ons pratically beggin' my handsome ass to apply for and use their cards! samsung, hanna, BC...all want me to use their goddam cards! my wife loves it! Evil or Very Mad

also, getting bank loans for cars and properity is now a piece of cake, too...although the interest rates have a lot to be desired...

You truly are stunned, aren't you? I've had two Korean credit cards for years. Disconnect your computer and go outside, you nonce.
