Alright, I have been on here to gripe before about winter camps. There seems to be a lot of confusion between my school and the school they are pimping me (and the other native teacher at my school) out to for this break.
So, I have a few questions. First of all, are we required by SMOE to remain here until 4:30 during winter vacation? The principal at the other school where we will be doing our camp is giving our principal grief regarding this. He is not 100% sure. They had been telling us we would only have to be there from 9-12:50. Now I guess they want us to come back to our school after that and wait around for 4:30.
Also, I guess the school where we will be doing our camp is paying us directly so it is not going through SMOE and it is basically like a part time job. We were not told this until today, but with such an arrangement, it seems like it should be optional. Now, we are being told that we must teach 22 hours outside of the hours we will be doing that camp or else we are "double dipping". If I had been told that up front, I would have happily just done a 22 hour a week camp at my school and passed on this hourly rate camp at another school. I was not given a choice nor was I alerted to the fact that it does not count as part of my teaching arrangement with SMOE.
I will be hearing from SMOE directly later today, but if any fellow teachers have had this sort of problem, I'd like to hear what you did to negotiate a better deal. I would really like to get out of this other camp but, seeing as it is the last day of school when they are telling me all of this, I am not sure what can be done at this point.
Thanks in advance |

From what I understand of the contract situations, your local school can farm you out during the break time to other schools if there is a need for your assistance. Regarding to time schedule, I believe the schedule of the school you will be helping is autonomous of the home school, i.e. if you are asked to stay until 4:30 then you will probably have to stay until 4:30 unless they are willing to bend or change. You may hear something different from SMOE, but I am doubtful that you are going to be pleased with the results. However, I hope the answer turns out to be what you are hoping for. |

ahhh, don't u just love camp season?
i'm not positive about SMOE, but in other public school contracts, u must work your normal 8hrs a day even during the vacation time. some principals are really nice and will let u leave after class is done and your prep for the next day is completed, but they don't have to.
as for doing the "second job" at the other school, just explain to them that u weren't aware that this wasn't part of your SMOE contract, were never given a choice, and politely refuse. if they persist, isn't there a place in your contract where it says your workplace? if so, u could try pointing it out to them and saying that u are legally unable to work at a different location.
hopefully, people will have better advice for u than that! good luck |

I hope SMOE continues to get the good teachers it deserves. |
