I choose to use money orders, rather than direct wire transfers. In my experience, transfers are more expensive, as the Korean bank charges you to create one, and the foreign bank charges to receive it.
I think it was 20,00 on the Korean side alone.... but, i'm not really sure.
I send my money orders home via registered mail.
At KEB, money orders cost 10,000won. You will need your passport. You don't need an account there to do this.
To ask for one, just say "meonee oduh chuseyo". The teller will give you a form, which will have english on it.
You need to fill in your name, your passport number, your telephone number, the beneficiary name, and the amount in foreign currency.
Filling in your address and beneficiary address ia not necessary, but can't hurt.
Another thing, money orders/tranfers are not done at the regular stand-up teller's counter. You need to consult the tellers at the counter with chairs. |

Here are a couple of threads on it:
How can I get a money order?
International bank transfers
I just asked for a banker's check when I went to KEB. It cost 10,000 won, and you get a receipt with it in case it's lost. I sent it airmail, and it was at my house in NY within a week. With the banker's check, you get a better rate (remittance I think), and it costs less than KEB's international wire transfer, and your bank in your home country won't charge you the incoming funds fee either. |
