What a wonderful opportunity, right? Teach at a univeristy. Good Benefits?
1. 1.7 million won/month ($2000.00/month)
2. 20 hrs/week teaching duty (Overtime rate is 25,000 won/hr.)
3. Paid two 2-week vacations, one summer and one winter.
4. Off-Campus spacious 3 bedroom apartment (shared by 2 teachers, fully furnished, within walking distance of the school)
Is there some kind of math error in number 1? Which $?
What do you think? |

That's not great. I think that may be your point - it's hard to tell. Judging by your perpetual negativity on these forums (you must be great fun at parties.... ), you're probably saying this is a crap deal, and it is.
a) Those holidays are mighty short (my last uni job gave me about 16 weeks paid holiday per year). That would mean that they've probably got you teaching kids or something during uni breaks. When I did this during the holidays at my old job, I got paid over and above my base holiday pay (equal to my regular session pay) for any classes I taught.
b) 1.7 is low for 20 contact hours.
c) Shared accommodation is a joke for uni instructors. My last place gave me and the wife a private, high-floor 32 pyung apart, less than two years old.
So what's your point? There are bad uni jobs, just like there are bad hagwon jobs. Anyone who's been here more than 5 minutes knows this.

Where is the job??? It has got to be a struggling countryside university.
Really....what would you expect. The people that apply for this job are hogwan standard so the hour and holiday deal looks sweet to them. I know it isn't a standard university contract so give it some prospective.
It might be the best job in the country. Money isn't everything you know!! |

There are much better hogwon jobs out there than that univerisity's offerings.
1.7 is too low for only 2 weeks paid vacation.
Shared housing, as another poster said, is a joke. Can't even believe that I read that.
The director of the program obviously has never hired foreigners, or a complete control freak, or has so little regard for foreigners that one ought to stay clear of that school with any kind of experience in this country. |

ALSO.. before you sign anything..
How long is the contract good for? 12 months with bonus pay? OR 11 1/2 months..
Sometimes they try to skip out on the bonus pay.. |

Yup. You got it. Sucks.
But if you've never had a Uni job you, might bend over for the slippery seduction.
No. Forget it. They don't have the logo or the big reviews to make anyone go that low.

Hey,
To give you an idea I get 2.3 million and 25 hours and one months vacation when you get 2 weeks (two months this year).
But I live in the student dorm, I get my own room.
You can get less hours for this pay.
Even if students don't come they may hold you to the contract hours.
It's your choice in the end. |

I have a Foreign Language Education Centre at a university in a small city, I teach adults and kids 50/50. My base is 1.6 for 18 hours per week, but we usually work 25-30 hours. I share accomodation, but my roommate is a good guy and the place is really nice with a yard and a patio on a quiet green campus. I actually prefer having someone to talk to after living alone for the past two years. I do, however, get 10 weeks paid vacation broken up into four chunks. During these months we only get base pay. I am only "hagwon standard." (Chortle) Ie. I do not have an MA. The idea that there is a standard is bollocks, though. I know lots of people with BA's that have MWF 18 hours per week, 5 months off, 2.4 million jobs. It all comes down to who you know. I see this job as a stepping stone to a proper lecturing job next year, when I will have a Graduate Certificate in Applied Linguistics. So, no,it is not as good as what some of the people on this board would lead you to believe is the standard here, but it is better than 90% of the jobs in this country. My job seems pretty good to most of the hagwoners I run into here. The intangible here is the working conditions, as someone said, it might actually be the best job in the country. My job gives me total autonomy and respect from my students. After chasing the dragon in Seoul, working 40-50 hours per week making 3.6 million per month I am glad to be out of the rat race and out of the Seoul subway system. In addition, living in the country is much cheaper and I have seen so much more of Korea in the past three months than I did in the two years before that. It's up to you, man. The $2000.00 dollar figure is in Canuck bucks. Suck it up. By the way, RR, this must be tongue in cheek. Stop lording your 5 months paid vacation over the rest of us. I know the score, I don't need your condescension. |
