Floyd Mayweather Jr., the world's No. 1 boxer, is strongly considering a revolutionary jump to mixed martial arts under a deal being discussed with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.
Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather's adviser and best friend, told ESPN.com Friday night that the five-division world champion, who generated 3.25 million pay-per-view buys and more than $200 million in revenue in two megafights in 2007, came away from a Thursday meeting with Cuban giving serious thought to taking his game and considerable drawing power to MMA.
"It's definitely something he is interested in, and when Floyd makes his move, obviously it's going to be a mega event," Ellerbe said. "We don't have a timetable. Floyd is taking some time off, but Floyd understands what is involved. You have to take time to go out and understand what you're getting involved in, and he's ready to do that. But it's something he's definitely interested in doing.
"Mark Cuban is a very successful businessman and has some very, very successful business ventures that we've discussed. We're looking to do a lot of business with Mark. He's a great guy, and we had a great meeting. Doing an MMA event with him is most definitely something we are looking at, among many things we are looking at doing with Mark Cuban."

It would take a lot of grappling training (2 years minimum) before he could legitimately step in the cage. |

One of the channels last night has a history of UFC special. Boxing promoters were adamantly defending boxing as the best fighting sport and downplaying UFC and MMA. That's because they are scared of boxing's future against MMA. It's much more enjoyable to watch people really fight. |

My wrestling coach in junior high said that boxing training was much harder than wrestling training.
Since Mayweather is a training freak and is always in very good shape, I think that he'd mainly need to learn some take-down defense and ju-jit-su.
Obviously, he'd mainly be a striker.
If he's really motivated to do it, he probably figures he could get ready within a year ...
He's also said that he doesn't want to box again for at least a year - or two. |

Total B.S. Anyone who's followed Floyd's career knows that you cannot believe anything that comes out of his mouth, and he would never put his nuts on the line against an opponent who stood a chance of beating him. His two "greatest" victories were against a fading, semi-retired De la Hoya, and a smaller Hatton who would get KO-ed by most of the top 10 fighters at 147lbs (Hatton knows it, and that's why he is moving back down and staying at 140). Floyd will next seek a super fight with the even smaller Manny Pacquiao for what will be hyped as a "P4P championship match". We will never see him in a 50-50 pick 'em fight against an equal sized opponent in his prime, e.g. Miguel Cotto, Paul Williams, Kermit Cintron. |

I don't think Cotto matches up that well with Floyd so I don't think that Mayweather is avoiding him.
That fight will probably take place in a year or so - if all goes well...
I don't think that size differential matters as much as talent and determination (eg: "Sugar" Ray Leonard's wins over "Hitman" Hearns and Marvin Hagler ...) |

Don't think we'll ever see it happen. Why would a boxer making $50 million fight move over to MMA where he'll probably make only a couple million a fight, with a much higher chance of getting his ass handed to him? |

I think Cotto has what it takes to put some serious pressure on Floyd. He is a bigger, stronger version of Hatton. I also believe that Joe Cortez would not let Hatton fight his fight by breaking them up the moment the went into a clinch. A good ref thell the fighters to work out of a clinch before breaking them up.
It's funny that Cortes of all people reffed the fight that way, considering the way he would allow John Ruiz smother his opponents. |
