|

Hey everyone... I've already posted in the Buy/Sell/Trade section that I'm looking to pick up a copy of SE Asia or other Asia guides from Mongolia, China/Tibet, Nepal, India.
But now I'm posting here because I am wondering what you all think of the different guidebook series. Basically, the only one I am remotely familiar with is Lonely Planet, but insight on other series would be useful. I have done a little bit of research before posting this message, but one can never have too much information when it comes to stuff like this. Obviously opinions will differ because people are interested in different things. Let me state that although I WILL be traveling on a budget, what is most important to me is a book that will provide for the most unique/unforgettable experience, which is why LP's SE Asia on a Shoestring may? may not? be the best choice for me.
My girlfriend and I are doing a 'round Asia trip when our contract is up (starting Mongolia for total eclipse Aug. '08 -> eastern China for Olympics -> Philippines -> Indonesia -> Malaysia and then around the rest of SE Asia and, time/money permitting, possibly after to Nepal, Tibet and India) and we want to start at least a little bit of planning before heading off.
Between LP, Frommer's, Rough Guides, Let's Go, etc. there must be a difference, so any light you are able to shed on said differences and any recommendations you're able to give would be priceless.
Thanks!! |

Tricky.
It really depends on which country, and what you are looking for.
For Korea I prefer the Moon Handbook with all its historical details and places not included in other guides.
I like the Maps/Transport sections from Lonely Planet best on the whole...but I try and avoid their accommodation recommendations unless I can't avoid it.
SE on a shoestring is great starting pint- but it really is too general to be as unique as you may be looking for. Tis a great starter though.
Frommers/Let's go are more upscale (in a bad way) IMHO. |

LP's the only thing I'd trust or bother paying money for. |

every travellere has to have a Love/Hate/Hate relationship with the LP. Although it can let you down at crucial times and means you end up at the same old places as everyone nothing else competes in terms of level of info and maps etc. Rough Guides are also pretty good. From what I have read of Let's Go they are aimed at American college students who want to party. Not my cup of tea at all but hey 'everyman do his ting a lickle way different'. |

LP has the best maps, that's for sure, but I like generally like the Rough Guide content more. So, put the content of RG together with LP's maps, and I'd be a pretty happy man. |
