Any thoughts on who makes a better digital camera? Is it cheaper to buy these in Korea or Japan?

I'm looking for a small, slim camera with about 7-8mp.

Cheers.

Samsung is an electronics company, they make electronics.

Canon is a camera company they make cameras.

I thought that Samsung would have some low cost fair quality stuff,
but really they have high cost fair quality stuff.

Samsung makes cameras with gadgets, they add a lot of gadgets to the
product, some times unrelated to photography type gadgets if you like
gadgets you will like Samsung. The styling is reminiscent of Russian
military gear.

If you want a camera any brand is better than Samsung, there are a few
exceptions to that but not many. Even Casio makes a better camera.

On average Canon is better than most, as is Nikon in the SLR area.

Every once in while Panasonic and Fuji create a star product in the
compact categories (remember Minolta).

Olympus and Pentax are nice also they have there own little quirks.

Sony is in a league of their own and can be a preferred camera by some.

In the end Canon is the benchmark by which all others are judged.

Samsung makes gadgets.

I picked up a Canon S5 IS, plus a 2gig high speed memory card for 350,000 at Yongsan electronics market.
I'd say that is comparable to Japan.

That's a nice price for that camera. If it weren't so big, I'd snap one of 'em up!

For any camera, if you enter the building from the side where the DVD vendors are, and go almost to the back, you can find DICA 21.
I've bought 2 cameras from them ove the years and both times they squeaked a better deal past their neighbors. I checked 7 other vendors this time in different parts of the building.

I bought a Samsung when I first got here. The software was buggy, so I took it back and they gave me another one. That one screwed up too. I won't make the Samsung mistake again.

It would not be a mistake to buy the SD1000 also known as the (IXUS 70)for an entry level camera.

US street price is $179 with a retail low of $155.

It's a Canon so you know you are getting a good camera from a good camera company.

It lacks image stabilization (IS), it may not be necessary with only a 3x zoom.

Also consider:

Fuji Finepix F40 (highly rated photo quality)
Panasonic Lumix FX30 (has IS)
Nikon S200 (well it's a Nikon)

is this supposed to be a slap at nikon?

seriously, neither nikon or canon are categorically superior. both are the leaders of the camera/dslr/slr market. both have products that are great. but as companies, neither is definitively "better".

the whole nikon vs canon war is for retards. both are good and preferences come down to need and personal taste.

---

to the OP, canon make good point and shoots. so do sony. if you're talking point and shoot market, i think sony would be hard to go past in terms of technology.

nikon/canon are top tier ...

olympus are top tier too ... take a look at their waterproof 7mp point and shoots. VERY good cameras. their dslrs are also awesome, but geared towards a more 'niche' market of users.

sony, fuji, pentax, panasonic are also good (second tier) ... sony are particularly good.

i'd put kodak, casio and samsung on the third tier.

that be my $0.02 Smile
