Air Conditioners for All Classrooms

By Bae Ji-sook
Staff Reporter

Air conditioning systems will be installed in all school classrooms in Seoul this year, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education said Monday.

According to its 2008 plan, 19,300 classrooms in 509 elementary, middle and high schools in Seoul will be equipped with air cooling and heating systems. In addition, when redesigning or building school buildings, only environmentally friendly materials will be used to prevent ``sick house syndrome.''

There will also be retired police officers stationed at each middle school to protect students from violence or other crimes on and off school grounds.

The plan also includes facilitating English classes. The number of native English teachers will be increased to 480 from the present 362 and more English camps, where students can feel and experience language in everyday life, will be established. Twenty-two English-speaking-only classrooms ― two per each district ― will have a test run, too.

The authority will expand the operating hours of kindergarten classes for double income couples. Fifteen public and 86 private facilities will have all day-care classes so that the parents will not feel pressurized to both work and rear children.

The education environment for handicapped students will improve, too. There will be 83 more classes set-up for physically or mentally challenged students inside ordinary schools so that handicapped students can receive education without being secluded from others.

To enhance the logical thinking ability of students, tests with essay questions will be more prominent. Online tests will be available to students and 3,500 teachers will receive special education for essay writing classes.

Also, there will be six nationwide tests for high school seniors including two mock college scholastic ability tests.

You can install them but getting an admin to turn them on is another story. Sorry I got my air conditioner and it wasn't until we changed admins I was allowed to use mine before July. I had huge class room and when I was able to control my own I would go in early get the fans and air con going. The room would be cool all day and the aircon unit would only have to run at about 26 degrees.

But I couldn't make them understand that theory so they turned off the air con except for the morning ... when it is a little cooler. Ya gotta love em sometimes.

I had a similar experience not long ago with the heat. The students were complaining about being cold even with their jackets on, and I had trouble writing on the board unless I put gloves on.

I asked the admin for heat, but didn't get it until a few weeks into the cold. Why didn't they turn the heat on? "To save money". Ridiculous.

Try to keep up. They handle AC in the winter, and heat during the summer. Rolling Eyes

If they raise their pay and cut out vacation bullshit such as unpaid extra work, maybe they'll have some luck.
