For 9 year old, get the DS, hands down. Get an R4 card and your DS is good to go.

I have never used the DS, but they seem more aimed at young children.

The psp is great for watching movies, but there are not a huge range of games for kids like the DS has.
Both the DS and the PSP can run downloaded games

I'd say the DS is 100% more suitable, and schoolyard cred, than the PSP. I don't think any 9 year-old wouldn't want a DS.

Where do I get an R4? I was just in Yongsan last night to buy a DS, and asked every place about the R4... they all laughed and said "no R4". (??) I was under the impression they were easy to get there?? And I can only play Korean games for now, which is fine for something like Mario Kart where it's just racing, but when it comes to a game like Brain Age or a complex game like Zelda, I need to be able to download the English version (or buy, but let's face it this is Korea so...).

Any hints, anyone?

PSP seems to be more for teenagers and adults. I doubt you want your 9-year-old playing SOCOM: Special Forces or whatever.

Get a DS and Nintendogs... my students love that, and they hate me when I take it from them and hide it during class.

They don't say "R4" . Koreans all say "Supercard". I don't know why they do that. Anyway...language can be set to English and it will still play both Korean and English games. EASY...so EASY to download the games.

Thanks. Just want to make sure... b/c I thought they understood me when I said "R4" and then said "no" to me. It didn't seem like they were confused at all. I thought a few weeks ago I read something about a Nintendo crackdown on piracy in Korea, so... has anyone here bought an R4 recently? If so... how recent, and was it in Yongsan or...?

Yeah all my kids love the DS. You mention PSP and they look at you like you're talking about the Yardbirds. "Move along, old man."

Another vote for then DS here. Any game you can be up and running in under 10 seconds. When I had a PSP it was like an eternity between the system powering on, the various title screens, and then the load before the first level. Ugh.
