Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zuihai are the only real choices on the mainland and they are nothing more than factory towns for HK. HK gives you the blend of true Cantonese and old colonial British anyway.
Enjoy HK and if you want to spend a day or two away from HK then go to Macau. It is a 1 hour jetfoil trip from downtown and is worth the trip. In Macau you get the Chinese alongside the Portugese. There are some great restaurants, the Casinos are different, there is the old fort and lighthouse, the islands of Colone and Taipa (they are different from the city of Macau), the temples and the OLD churches from the Portugese era.
Lots of great culture in both, enough to keep you busy for a week. Skip the factory towns. Not worth the effort.
If you REALLY wanted to you can WALK from Macau to Zuihai (get a visa/pass at the frontier). Alternatively you can use a pair of binoculars and look across the river and see what it is like. It is only about 100 meters across the river from the maritime museum in Macau.
The next best thing you will get to this is if you to take a trip to Beijing on your next holiday.
Enjoy HK. You get a great blend of the old and new, Chinese and the west. The mainland down there has nothing to offer. |

Just back from shenzhen half on business and half on holiday. Very nice city, but you have to enjoy cities to like shenzhen. Lots of vibe in that city, feels like the wild west of capitalism, but what a cool place to enjoy a few days. Sure Hong Kong is so much more, but don't count the mainland out. |
