So during my stay in Korea I've read both Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead, both for the first time. I think they've got some good points, because I've always liked to be proud of my work and work with others that are proud of theirs, but of course the books fall short of reality in a few ways.
Anyways, what do you think Ayn Rand would have thought about Korea and Korean culture? I think about her faceless antagonists in the books, the supposed mass of apathetic people who don't want to make decisions, do good work, or be proud of themselves for anything. The people who believe selfishness is evil, whereas she believes its the highest virtue. The people who basically cause the downfall of civilization in Atlas Shrugged when the others step out of the way... and I wonder how relevant it is to the Korean experience.
What do you guys think?
oh and if ddeubel comes to this thread I'm self-destructing it. |

I think she would've supported the chaebols maintaining absolute power over industry and eventually absorbing all branches of the government. |

I think she would have applauded the U.S.-backed dictatorships which put economic development in the hands of a few captains of industry, allowing for the fast growth over the thirty years prior to the recent democratic turn which has seen the increased power of unions and a slowdown in profits. |

I think if Ayn Rand walked the streets of Seoul, she'd only find more reasons for believing in her enigmatic utopia.
Why?
It's full of humans.
Dirty nasty beings....

Oh yeah, that's a good point. The "miracle on the Han river" would have been right up her alley. Also that guy Park Chun Hee who was a dictator for a while she probably would have liked.
I'm trying to decide if she would have liked Confucianism or not. Did she ever write anything about that? I don't think she would have gone for the unequal relationships that are not based on merit. |

And let us not forget the rape fetish that comes up again and again in Rand's work. Why any people take that crazy bitch seriously is beyond me. |

It's a philosophy. I rather enjoy Ayn Rand's philosophy because it gives props to the rational person - the one who dictates their own terms and defines "success" for themselves.

I don't like her philosophy because I don't own a company. |

Misogyny and homophobia aside, even as a libertarian I can't abide the woman and her writings due to her absolutist nature and McCarthy-ite tendencies to paint anyone with a dissenting view as inherently evil. Sometimes A does not equal A. |

Thank you.
I have refused to date fans of Ayn Rand. And the Grateful Dead.
Both groups have a too-high concentration of crazies. |
