|
|
I'm finally looking to step into the next generation of console gaming, and I've decided on the 360 for a variety of reasons. However, since I will probably be spending the bulk of the next few years in Korea, I thought I should ask about it here.
1) Will an XBox 360 purchased in Canada work fine in Korea? I'm planning to just plug it into one of those big converter blocks, like I would my laptop.
2) How can you deal with the 3RROD in Korea? Here you can package it up, send it to Microsoft and get a replacement system, or just take it to someone who knows how to fix it, usually for about $50. Does anyone know where you can get it fixed in Korea?
3) Are "backup" games widely available in Korea (by widely, I really just mean at Yongsan)? I'd assume they are, and I probably will just make them myself, but it would be nice if they were available.
4) How much are Xbox 360s going for in Korea? New or used.
Thanks |

If you don't mind, I'd like to add another question:
5) Is the Korean Xbox's interface in Korean? If so, can it be changed to English? If not, is it easy enough to navigate?
Cheers. |

1. Yes, I believe so as long as you're using the big power converter.
2. From what I've heard, that's exactly what you do. Do a search on here, someone has talked about what they did when they got the 3RROD in Korea. Seemingly the newer HDTV Xbox 360s get this problem much less frequently than the older ones but I don't know if that's really true...
3. Of course, you can get anything like that in Yongsan. I prefer to just buy new games though so I can play Xbox Live. But then, I come from the UK where a game costs 30 or 40 quid, so about 80 bucks. They're half that price here, and that's the expensive ones. I earn enough to buy a couple of new games each month and sell the old ones at Yongsan after I'm done with them. Quite happy with my little collection. Anyway, I'm sure someone else can tell you more about "backups".
4. I got mine new about a year ago for 250,000, with two wireless controllers (one rechargable, one batteries), the hdtv cable, hard drive and all that. Bought it at Yongsan and the guy threw in any three games of my choice for 50,000.
5. The menu system can be changed to any language out of the extensive list...very easy. Just console settings, language, and there you go. |

I've been having trouble finding a system online with 1 controller and no HDD (aka arcarde version) for under 300K Won. Why do they sell them so incredibly cheap at Yongsan? |

Um um um really don't know. Just checked out Gmarket and aye, they're all around the 300k mark. Mind you, those were all "premium" ones, 20 GB harddrive included. Definitely don't get an arcade one for that price.
When I got mine, a year ago, the guy had a few. Two were second hand and one was new (well, to be honest, it wasn't brand new but rather just unused - unwanted gift - of course he could have been talking a load of shite but I don't think so....) and he was selling them all for the same price. I've been to Yongsan plenty of times since then for games but never enquired after the price of the boxes themselves anymore.
If you can, take a Korean with you if you go to Yongsan. I had one with me and she certainly helped me get a bargain. She's good at the ol' haggling thing and got me the rechargable controller thrown in for free. |

My mate brought his over and has brought a LOAD of games that seem to be region free without needing to chip his system...
It is a Pal system and he brought all the games from Yongsan... |

You sure your laptop needs a big box? mine doesn't need one. Mines a Sony Vaio
There was a price drop in American X box30s recently, not sure if the Korean x box got a price drop, but stick to the American X box IMO. |

Thanks for the answers guys.
I forgot to mention XBox Live. Any problems with that? Either with getting a subscription, or access? |

Nope, absolutely no problems. Just sign up for it the same way you would at home. I'm just trying to remember back...I think you just sign up on the console...put your card details in and you can buy Microsoft points or subscriptions at the touch of a button. Your console can be in English, so no worries there. I mostly play Winning Eleven 2008 and Call of Duty 4 on Xbox Live. WE2008 is only Asian region, so mostly Japanese or Korean people. Call of Duty 4, however, has the sweet sounds of nasal, American teenagers screaming zomgz insults at each other...it also has a mute option for voices.
I would humbly disagree with the person who suggested buying an American Xbox, simply because you can buy an Asian region one here, buy lots of cheap games here and they're still (almost) all in English. If you get an American one, you're going to be doing all your shopping online. Play-asia.com is a good site for ordering games but they're usually more expensive than Yongsan.
Mind you, there are always a few games (Halo 3, Assassin's Creed, Eternal Sonata spring to mind) that have special Korean versions, so you can't find English versions here in country. For those, you can buy Asian region, English language versions online.
When I came out here for my second contract last year, I ummed and ahhed over whether to get an Xbox 360. It has since definitely proved worth it and help me keep my sanity in darker moments...though Winning Eleven 2008 still causes me to cry when I lose online... |

I had a few problems getting demos early due to not being in the states. It refused me, but I can't remember the exact mesage. |

Just to add my two cents about the buying a Korean Xbox without having to worry about region coding, etc. Well I had to go to the trouble of selling my Korean Xbox 360 because NHL 2008 was NOT being released outside North America, and worst of all it was region LOCKED! You cannot believe how pissed I was as I didn't understand their reason for region locking it. If I wanted to go the trouble of ordering it from Canada and having it shipped over here that should be MY choice, right? EA really pissed me off. So I went to the trouble of selling my Korean Xbox 360 with a bunch of games and getting a colleague's friend to buy me a U.S. one on base. What a frackin hassle that was. All so I could play this ONE game, that's how dedicated I am to playing hockey.
So take a hard look before you buy a Korean Xbox because even modified there is no way around the region coding. Best of luck......... |
