| when reinstalling tiger, if I chose the archive option does that preserve all my files. I would hate to lose all my photos and other files. |

I think erasing all your files only happens if you choose "Erase and Install."
Usually, Apple is pretty good about providing Help and "What's this?" buttons. Did you check Apple's own help system?
It's always a good idea to make a backup first. |

It should archive all yor existing files and settings.
But, I would be safe and back up everything on a CD. At the very least back up impiortant files/photos, zip them, and keep them on you rsektop before doing an Archive Install.

Yeah if you right-click on the drive you can preserve what's in it...

| Well, apple haters will love this, apple really fukked up their last update. If you haven't updated your computer lately don't do it now. I tried to update mine yesterday and the update caused my macbook to crash. It only opens to a grey screen and does nothing else. I don't have the option of backing up my files. |

Hmm. That would be funny if it were true. My mac is perfectly capable of doing just what you described.
Hey, if i wanted to, i could program my own shortcut, too. I bet you though you were special.
I hate most shortcuts, though. I rarely use them. |

| well I reinstalled OSX with the archive option. It saved all my files. I felt that my HD was a little too full so I saved the important files and did a clean install. updated all the software. continued to work fine after that thankfully. then I went about reinstalling all my programs. That took quit a long time. I downloaded some larger programs with my windows computer using Utorrent and then using and SD card to transfer them and then install them. Now my macbook is working well once again. |

| Oh and to address your issue, when you do an archive and install preserving, your files will be saved in a folder called previous system located in your home folder. the archive and install differs from an erase and install in that it allows you to backup your files and if desired preserve user and network settings while reinstalling the OS and software. So yes your files would still be there. |

| That should never happen. Image how people would go on if that happened on windows. The poo would hit the fan. I guess apple can get away with it since they only have a small portion of the market share. |

It has happened with windows a lot, and the poo hits the fan hard especially for businesses losing their productivity because of these things. If you don't believe me ask any IT person, heck ask any IT person about how much fun it was to incorpeate their old systems and business machines into a Vista environment. MS generally doesn't have a real fix in 2 days like Apple does as well. Not hating on MS, hell I am thinking of installing vista on my Mac as an upgrade from Xp ( I just upgraded from Tiger to Leopard and am loving it as well!). |
