Anyone know how to go about finding a goshiwon? Im gonna take a Korean class for three months in April. I was wondering if anyone new how I could go about finding a goshiwon and then reserving my room or whatever it is you have to do.
Any help is great! |

I live in a goshiwon at the moment..it's hella gay, but if you must do it just wander around the neighbourhood where you're taking the course (presumably a university area), and walk into one and ask. That's it. But know that it's not pretty...as I'm sitting here I can touch all four of my walls. Woo! |

ah goshiwon sweet goshiwon -
first of all - you really need to have either a K friend or someone who speaks K to go w/you - because you can bargain your room rate - - i've done it each time - have stayed in one goshiwon 2 different times and another one -
second - check out as many as you have time for - they are all small but you'll see the difference when you look. the newer ones actually have an entire bathroom in your room - shower, toilet and sink - you might pay a little more but it's so worth it not to have to schlep down the hall to a public toilet
ask about noise - you don't want paper thin walls
ask about smoking if that's an issue - usually people aren't supposed to smoke
make sure there's a washing machine available for use
all goshiwons have rice for tenants - it's cooked for you, they don't want anyone starving, also water is provided, hot and cold
also interne access is standard - you just plug in unless you are wireless and already have arrangements w/a company
to reserve a room you'll just give a small deposit and tell them what day you want to move in.
good luck, pm me if you have more questions but mostly like i said, have a K friend or someone who speaks K go w/you.
good luck! |

Your goshiwon only dates goshiwons with what... the same floor plan? The same pyung? With the same ondol plumbing? How do you feel about living in a gay goshiwon? Did you move in thinking it would be roomier? If the word gay is a pejorative to you, why didn't you find yourself a hetero goshiwon? |

In my experience, you can rent a room at a love hotel on a monthly basis for not much more than a goshiwon. Depending on the area and how busy the hotel is, it can be pretty cheap. I paid 300,000 won a month for a room with a double bed, full bath with a tub, tv, use of their washing machine and linen service. Now, this wasn't in Seoul or near a university, but keep it in mind. Check with the hotel/yeogwans around a train station close to where you want to stay. Believe me, your sanity is not worth the 80,000 you might save each month by living in a goshiwan. |

Some goshiwons can actually be pretty nice, almost as nice as a regular apartment. The problem is that the nice ones tend to be full unless you are planning six months in advance. As others said, just do a lot of looking around and enlist the help of someone who can speak Korean, you should be able to find something livable for the short term. There are websites for goshiwons with pictures of the rooms that can help. Type 고시원 or 고시텔 into naver and you should find someplace to start looking. |
