Ok, I was planning on taking a trip to Europe to hang out and have fun......I was thinking of England because I dig british pop culture, but I was warned that it was hugely expensive and if I talked to the people there, they would lift one eyebrow in a questionable way.

Like this:

So I scratched England from my travel destination.

A good friend of mine recommended that I should take a trip to Eastern Europe.....cool places to see.......easy women to do (uh....I mean.......easy "things" to do.......uh......oops Embarassed )

Anyway, everytime I mention about my plan to go there, everyone says, without fail, "What about what happened in the movie 'hostel'?"

EERRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!......

Please, help me on this......
For those of you who'd been to Eastern Europe, what was your experience like?
What countries should I put on my itinerary and which countries or places should I avoid?

I really need to know the true skinny on this?

Thanx and cheers in advance Very Happy

If you pay serious heed to the advice you've quoted above, you'd do better just to stay at home.

I would advise not going to Bulgaria. Goto Turkey although its not strictly Turkey but its cheap and lovely and food is great.

It's been 10 years since I went, but everything was very cheap in eastern Europe while it is very fancy and classy. I stayed in the best hotel in Budapest for $65 a night which was a 5 star grand hotel ornately decorated in marble with many sculptures and paintings. Mercedes Benz Taxis would pull up in front the hotel for $2 a ride and wisk you off to the sights like Heroes Square and the Vaci Utca shopping district which had lots of artsy culture on the cobble stone pedestrian streets. I took a 2 hour evening cruise up and down the Danube river with a live jazz band aboard and a wine and cheese buffet for $25. I seen a very nice classical music concert for $10. If you love classical music, art, and old world charm, eastern Europe has a lot to offer and is not too expensive. The cobble stone streets, castles, art, music, museums, and friendly people just can't be beat. This was one fabulous trip on a shoe string budget.

Prague/Praha is one of the best cities in the world.

I have a friend who lived in Austria for a year and loved it.

Go for it, you'll have a good time.

England isn't at all unaffordable. To assert as much is as erroneous as to assert that "Korea is cheap". If it does appear unaffordable, the reason for the unaffordability is millions and millions of Brits being well-off enough to pay those rates. As a person from the US - where people on average earn more than the Brits - you shouldn't have any problem, unless of course you're an unemployable EFL-peddling layabout. Laughing

Europe is great...I've always loved going there. So much to see, do, eat, drink....ah. And so sophisticated to my americana eyes. Smile
Eastern Europe was loads of fun/very interesting.
Prague is a fantastic city. I don't see how anyone wouldn't enjoy their stay there. So much history and culture and also, of course, a party/club scene.
I also really liked Portugal and Turkey. Egypt (I know it's not Europe) was a really cool place. Met a guy in Amsterdam and we all flew over to Cairo for a week (cheap flights abound).
England for the traveler can be either really cool...it can be expensive. I remember paying 20 quid a night for a hostel room. Mental. But, it is a good old place, definately worth a visit. Groceries aren't expensive, but if you're out drinking away and clubing it up...the price in numbers will be the same as in the US...but doubled [eg. a pint of beer in the pub for 3 quid/6$]
[to any UK-tizens...I am only writing from my experiences, so pardon me if I'm wrong Smile]

One of the cheapest airports in Europe to fly into is Franfurt (at least it was a few years ago)...get a rail pass and then go wherever you fancy. And don't forget the discount airlines that you can hop around on. And they have some great deals online as well, for airfare/hotel combos. Paid 300 quid for a week in Turkey (from London, for 2). Off-season though. Rolling Eyes
