I went in search yesterday evening for a jar of Vegemite. I could easily picture it on the shelves of any foreign food store but, turns out the "black gold"'s not so easily attainable. I went to what I figured would be the best place to find the stuff: "The Aussie Shop", at the MacDonald's end of the main drag, around the corner from the little Marrakesh Nights. I didn't see anything that looked like a shop, just a pub. I wandered around looking lost for a bit when the owner, Tony, came out. I told him my plight and he pulled me in the kitchen by the arm, sat me down and assessed my knowledge of his country's pride and joy, then proceeded to tell me the political and commercial history of why there is NO Vegemite being sold in Korea. I won't really go into it (though it includes perceived prenatal complications due to folate and the evilness of Kraft, and a Korean tendency to do whatever the Americans do) but he's working on the issue currently.
After much ball-busting, as he put it (I really wasn't THAT pushy), he conceded to giving me "a generous dollop" of what my unenlightened American friend says tastes like ear wax (who's tried ear wax!?!).
Good luck to all of you Aussie expats in getting some out of 'ol Tony any time too soon though - he's "rationing" for his sangas and jaffles (what?!). I would suggest though, register on his website and check the news for any secret codewords coming your way. That's www.aussieshopkorea.com.
Turns out Tony's a former "Choirboy". Ever heard the song "Run to Paradise"? Judging by my new friend's love for this stuff, I think it may have been an ode to Vegemite.
Thank you Tony. I can now make my veggie haggis for Robbie Burns Day. |

| I had to laugh at a recent video, of Americans tentatively tasting Vegemite. I NEVER ate it raw. It's way too salty on it's own. With toast & butter only. Try also Promite & Marmite, in an emergency. Me? I can live without the stuff. |

| Bovril, Marmite and Vegemite (as well as Tabasco Sauce) are humanity's crowning achievements. Cheers for the link. |

Coincidence! That song was on my iPod as I read your thread. |
