They don't have mobile phone service in Korea yet. Hopefully, next year.

Just kidding. You can't bring your US phone over, you need to get one here. Korea isn't really connected to the rest of the world and you can't just change sim cards like everywhere else. You can do pay as you go, or get a plan here.

The good thing is you can get some of the most advanced phones on the planet right here connected to some of the fastest networks there are. Just getting over that first hurdle is the problem!

There are KT (Korean Telecom) stores around just about every corner. They very often have 2nd hand, top-up card phones with English menus for anything ranging from around w70,000.
The couple who ran the store I went to, got my phone all set up for me while I waited. 15 minutes and a cup of well-being tea later, I was mobile.

The Buy/Sell/Trade forum often has 2nd hand phones for less.

Buying a top quality cell phone is no problem...getting a service plan so you can use it, without a Korean co-signer, is a beitch.

I got a good cell phone at an LG dealer...... It's only 13,000 wom/month, plus 6,000 won per hour of talk time (received calls don't count) and 100 texts.

The phone itself was only 25,000 won. All I needed was my alien card and my bank book (I faxed them a copy of the front page the next day actually). It wasn't hard at all, and I got to pick my number and everything.
