My co teacher just told me at the end of the day today that after the yearly tax adjustments I owe 158,000 won to the taxman. Does this sound right? I have been here since 1st March and return to UK end Feb..I have been reading posts where others are saying they are OWED taxback...my school (public) has never actually given me a payslip since day one..I know other foreigners in public schools who also don't get them. I guess I should have pushed them on that really. Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

It may be that they did not take out taxes since you did not get any pay slips and now you are required to pay in the amount that should have been deducted from your pay to start with. I wonder though, how could they figure out your taxes without having any of the information that would have been nedded to complete your taxes in the first place. Just an observation. |

Monthly tax deductions are based on an estimate of our year-end taxes due -- its imprecise & I believe tax rates went up a bit this year. Its normal for public school admin offices to file returns on our behalf. I've been in the system for years & I've experienced an adjustment every january, sometimes in my favor, sometimes not. No reason for them to gouge you. I'd take it as legit. |

All they need is your income figure. Assuming the teacher is single with no dependents, hasnt run up extraordinary medical bills, & hasnt made major credit card purchases, its a generic filing. |

If you haven't been here for more than 2 years; would go to the district tax office. Have them connect you with the foreigner help line [02-397-1440] because they speak no english almost invariably [one of the reasons lots don't deal with the taxes, though it is as easy as Labor, and far less time consuming]. Ask them to clarify if your school is tax exempt.
Regardless of time here, go to the NTS site and do the Year End Tax Settlement Calculation yourself.
The school may be over paying, in which case... well go to the Tax Refund thread and figure it out for yourself. |
