Alright, when I first decided to come to Korea, it was only going to be for a year, August 2007 - 2008. I really do love my job here and my employer. I've had no griefs and have established a really good relationship with my employer. However, since I knew I was only going to be here for a year and I'm a recent grad, I started to look back home for a career job in my field. Through a friend of mine I've been offered a very nice position in which the company will actually pay for my MBA. The issue is, it requires me to leave in June instead of August. I hate quitting things I've started and since I really like my employer, I don't want to make things difficult on them. I have to give at least 60 days notice if I do decide to quit.
I've pretty much decided that I want to leave for the position back home, so I'll have worked 9 months of the contract by that time, I just have a few questions.
Am I entitled to my pension?
Any chance of getting a flight home? My contract says it would be up to the company, but has anyone had luck in getting a plane ticket home ever after leaving the contract early?
When do I tell them? Exactly 2 months before or should I give them as much time as possible?
Chances of them just dumping me as soon as they find a replacement?
thanks in advance guys... |

Yes you can claim your pension.
That would be an exceptionally kind boss that would pay your flight home. Figure no.
Unless you have a great personal relationship with your boss, I'd say give the contractual notice.
Youre shorting his expectations, he might do the same to you. |

Don't let an amazing opportunity waste away for a flight home and sounds like an amazing job to just fulfill your contract here teaching kids. If you stay here over a year it gets harder and harder to find a good job back home. Give the notice even 30 days and go get that job. It is not worth ruining your life because you are buddy buddy with Mr. Kim. This is your life, he will find a new teacher go get your MBA and put the effort in the job back home. Teaching in Korea career wise is just spinning your wheels. |

I totally agree with most of this. Take care of what is going to put you in the best situation for the rest of your life op. I don't necessarily agree with the longer you are here thing. Is that just Canada? I don't anticipate having a problem when I return to the States just because I spent a few years abroad. I never had a problem finding a professional job before, and don't see how that is going to change. Just my opinion. |

Same here. I am a certified teacher in the States. It doesn't matter how long I stay here. I WILL find a job. |
