What troubles me most is the following

my problem with rote memorization is that if you can memorize it, a machine can memorize it better! in real life, people use books and computers to look things up and i think that schools need to look beyond test scores and into the real world...
memorizing the multiplication tables past 9X9 is retarded since you can simply add the product of the ones numeral with the product of the tens numeral to find the answer! furthermore, this method allows you to multiply ANY two numbers, regardless of their size!
i think schools should teach skills and processes rather than bits of information... teach people how to find, use, evaluate, cross-reference, and synthesize information instead! |

the "indian math style" has been the rage in japan for the past few months.
i don't know if it's memorization, but a "trick" or something that the person uses to muliply large numbers.
the method has been presented a number of times on tv, and it's in the books too. i just don't know it. heh heh.
japanese education needs some kind of reform.
and parents need to actually take part in their kid's education...simple things like...maybe teaching your kid hiragana before they start the first grade at age 7 would be a start...  |

Isn't that what schools are for? I didn't know how to read, write or even speak english before i started elementary. |
