Korean-American Man Killed by California Police

A Korean-American man was shot and killed by police in Orange County, California on Monday. According to the online edition of the Orange County Register on Tuesday, the unidentified 28-year-old man died on the spot after being shot by police outside a liquor store on Whittier Boulevard in the city of La Habra just after 2 p.m. Monday.
La Habra police said that two officers were sent to the area to investigate a complaint about a man writing graffiti on several buildings in the neighborhood.

The officers found a man who matched the description of the vandal and demanded that he stop. The man allegedly confronted the officers with a weapon and was shot. He was dead when rescue workers arrived at the scene.

The victim was reportedly shot more than once, although it is unclear how many bullets struck him and whether both officers fired. Controversy over excessive police response is expected as the officers are known to have fired more than 10 shots at the man.

Police said the slain man appeared to be the vandal, but they did not confirm his identity. His weapon was not revealed.

I'm tired of people writing like it's smart procedure to fire just one shot and then wait to see if he's capable of firing back. Even wounded he could get lucky and put one between your eyes.

Once you start shooting then you continue until he drops. What else can a cop do? You've already made the decision to kill him. One bullet isn't always enough for a instant kill, and when you have a large mag semiauto pistol it really doesn't take long for two people to put ten rounds into something. Especially with adrendaline pumping.

Only cavet would be if the weapon wasn't a gun. Then there might be a case of excessive force.

According to the cop on the video, the guy had a tire iron and one cop thought the guy was going to hit him with it. Both cops fired their guns.

Ummm...10 shots?

This one sounds like a case of excessive use of force by the cops.

The 'discussion' was enlightening. From reading two pages, there are just as many dweebs on that site as there are here. Dweebness may afflict all human societies in equal measure. I suppose that is good news.

It was a tire iron, not a gun.

Still a weapon though... but it does change things a bit in my books.

Watch the video and you'll see him stroll over to the police, take a puff from a smoke, and then walk away.

I'm guessing a few things...

-the police told him to drop the pipe
-he's one cool mo'pho in the face of danger
-the rest of the incident happened off camera.

It'd be nice to see the police releasing the tapes from the cars... I hope they have sound.

If it were just two police officers, and they each unloaded 5 shots, it would have been done in about 2 seconds. Total of ten shots.

Not excessive force in the least.

You obviously have never fired a semi-automatic weapon such as a 9mm or .40 caliber.

Nothing wrong at all with how many shots were fired. The inquiry must be made as to what prompted the shooting, however.

Perhaps kimchi breath did him in.

So what's the gripe, oh SuperHero?

You don't know diddly about police engagement rules, do you?

Perhaps you should get the Korean American community in L.A. to rise in up in show of unity?

Maybe the new Korean administration can lodge a protest in Washington through its ambassador there and threaten to boycott the import of American beef?

I hope you're joking. If not, that's a pathetic bit of reductionist thinking on your part. How could you possibly know the feelings or reaction of most LAPD officers to this incident?

Actually if a man armed with a knife or some sort of other deadly weapon is less than 25 feet away they can close the distance and kill a man armed with a gun.

Based on the information this thread presents, these police officers acted appropriately. A tire iron is a deadly weapon. If these officers believed this suspect threatened their lives and would not stop, then their training prompts them to resort to deadly force to stop him.

And there is no magic number. One fires rounds until the suspect is stopped. Could be three rounds; could be three hundred. No one is counting how many rounds they are firing. Rather, they are looking to see when the suspect and the deadly threat he poses, stops.

Posters may come here and rant against the Man all they like. But these are the facts of life. If you do not want the police to stop you from harming them, then do not threaten them. Same thing for tasers: comply with police instructions if you do not like them.

End of story.

Racism of the kind "Pink ____ been doing this forever. When are people are going to realize these mentally retarded pork heads need to be exterminated?" isn't tolerated on here. Big difference between Daves and those oxygen-robbers.
