While The Godfather is certainly one of the indicators of the highwater mark of American filmmaking in the 1970s, I am of the mind that the second is just as good if not better. However, these films are completely inextricable, unlike the third (thank goodness Sofia Coppola opted for directing rather than being in front of the camera).
I would recommend watching the director's cut of the two that place all of the scenes in chronological order. As odd as it sounds, this cut of the films doesn't lessen their impact; if anything it makes the whole epic hang together even better.
It is astonishing to consider what Francis Coppola accomplished in the 1970s: screenplay for Patton, the aforementioned 1 and 2, The Conversation, and his magnum opus Apocalypse Now. Wow. |
