We all know the clean-up is already underway, but they've got a huge job on their hands and need all the extra help they can get.

환경운동연합 (Korean Federation of Environmental Movements) is organizing buses of volunteers to go help with the oil spill clean-up this Saturday. It looks like they have groups going from all over the country, but since so many of us are Seoul based, here is the link to the group heading off from Seoul at 7am on Satuday morning;

The bus cost for those going from Seoul is 10,000w, but food will be provided. You'll need to provide your own boots, gloves, mask and bucket etc.

Unfortunately applying to help out may be problematic as the application requires a Korean identity number - and it's all in Korean of course. This is where Korean friends and co-workers come in very useful *^^*

If you are interested I would suggest getting in contact with KFEM now. If you are not confident about navigating your way around their website get a Korean friend to help you.

Unfortunately, going by past attempts to join groups using my ARC number I'd have a guess no. Give it a go though - you might be surprised.

Think people, Don't mean to put a spanner in the works, but koreans are'nt big on legal liability.
If you get injured, poisoned, whilst helping, who covers the cost?
Probably nobody. leave it to Samsung, it's their barge that caused it.

Oh yea I forgot to mention, you need permission from Immigration.
Cleaning up oil spills is not within the range of approved activities for E2 visa holders.

I certainly agree that it would be nice to have the equipment provided. If it turns out that we have to shell out something like 50,000w for boots and masks etc I'll just send a donation instead.

As for any risks that I'll get busted for an E2 violation due to spending one Saturday on a beach trying to help clean up an oil spill.... I doubt it. And if it did happen it would be a very amusing story for the international media.

Yes, the fumes will be nasty. But, oh well. I imagine the long term effect of spending night after night in smoky Itaewon nightclubs would be more injurious.

We potentially have a few people from Yeosu going up but we are still uncertain if they will have any equipment we can borrow.
