Arirang seems starved for content. After they do music videos trumpeting the virtues of Korea and then do a short newscast trumpeting Korean industry and politics and then interview some foreigners who will only say glowing things about Korea ("I love kimchi! Soon everyone in America will eat kimchi! There can be no doubt about it!"), they turn their airwaves over to corporate promo videos. The latest is something called "dipda"

http://www.dipda.co.kr/

Basically it's a plastic version of that spinning disk you find in parks that ajummas love to jump on and just go to town, spinning one way, spinning another way...

The video Arirang runs is just priceless. Like, "you know how boring top notch gyms are? What with all those weight machines, tvs, young women bounding around, the vast variety of activities, well now you can buy a $10 piece of plastic and spin spin spin your way to the body of a greek god!"

What's really sad is how hard they try to make this stupid thing look fun and interesting. "Hey, buy two and then you can play patty cake with your husband!"

After over 7 years of "watching" Arirang, I have yet to figure out who, exactly, their target market is. Everyone with bad taste, I guess.

You've been watching for seven years?

They're striving for the Hanson market, people! Laughing

It's so painfully satisfying at times, though, like a serious "The Office" or something. Cringe-worthy.

My faves:

- The Elvis-Costello-lookalike with the weird manerisms and poetry narrating one of his "A Day in the Life of a Weirdo in Korea", or something along those lines. Creepy.

- The narrator for all docu-pieces about Korea: "This proud tradition brings peace to the Peninsula while spiritually guiding the Korean people to a better tomorrow..."

- The new series with a young gyopo and a young North-American (kinda looks like Stiffler from American Pie) discussing Korean customs, language, food, culture. Brilliant stuff!

After 5 years here is my favorite (courtesy of Arirang News):

Monday: Government warning economic slowdown next quarter. 6 Party Talks continue with deal imminent.

Tuesday: Exports at all time high.

Wednesday: Government warning economic slowdown next quarter. 6 Party Talks continue with deal imminent.

Wednesday: Exports at all time high.

Thursday: Government warning economic slowdown next quarter. 6 Party Talks continue with deal imminent.

Friday: Exports at all time high.

As of January 1st, Arirang has no longer been broadcast in Jeju-do.
I do miss their news because the BBC was pulled a few years ago and I don't get CNN.

Love 'em!

"Rank Korea" is always great too: make up some bullcrap praise towards Korea, add a foreigner willing to agree and you're golden!

South America and the Middle East, and anyone else unlucky enough to have it as a channel on their satellite package.
