|
|
I have been interested in working for a public school job. I don't want to work for a hagwon anymore. They are rather risky to work for. Anyway, my job ends January 31st. When's the earliest a public school could take me on? It would be more convenient if the job would end in early February, because I think many jobs open up then.
Any ideas?
Thanks.... |

That's fine and all, but what would I do for three weeks without a job?
My job finishes on January 31st. Any ideas? I probably could convince my boss to allow me to stay in my apartment until February something, but I am not sure how long.... Maybe, until the 12th of Feb.
I definitely wouldn't mind working in Seoul. |

Adventurer: Where are you based? Seoul, Busan, Other?
I just went into the EPIK / NIIED office in Hye Hwa, on Monday 17 September, with my original degree, transcripts, & walked out with a job the same afternoon, after an interview.
Even though the website says the deadline closed Dec 15 for March placements, there are always vacancies:
* In case of vacant positions, documents are accepted at all times
Ring them & make an appointment.

GEPIK & SMOE are your other options. |

Adventurer, you may have a problem staying in the country. What's the grace period after the visa? 2 weeks? My idea: Save some scratch, get a job lined up here and go to Thailand or somewhere cheap for your visa run. Spend your extra time in a cheap bungaloo on an island or up in N. Thailand in the jungle. |

My school needs someone at exactly that time.
I've already sent you a private message with the details. Not sure things can be processed that quickly but who knows...? |

Well, my hagwon is going bankrupt but not the corporation. I believe they owe me a flight home. I could see about asking to stay in my place until February 10th if necessary and then come back around March?
What do you guys think? My contract is technically finished, I am getting my severance, I am overcontract, but I am not over my visa. My last day at work is January 31st. Based on that, what would you do? |

isn't your school the one that said because the last FT took too much vacation, you can't have any days at all? which is, oh so very, illegal.
honestly, why would u recommend someone else into that situation? |

I believe these to be good recruiters who have public school contracts.

For SMOE jobs, you must use one of their 4 recruiters. Google "ETIS" and find SMOE's site, the list of recruiters is on it.
Like I said before, Adventurer, I'd seal a job, get your documents in order and take a few weeks of vacation at home or in a cheap tropical climate. |

I can recommend my school, but with warnings. As far as co-workers go, this is a great environment. Already emailed the OP about it.
The vacation thing was a fluke... a HUGE mistake on their part. They won't be doing it again after this experience with me, I'm sure, otherwise my poor co-teacher will quit and the recruiter will drop them.
so they say... |

I am looking at all my options. I am just concerned about going to place associated with warnings regarding management... |

If your do a google search for "eslcafe.com" and "smoe," you'll find a lot of things already said about them. Things to keep in mind:
-The school you go to is a gamble, as is the quality of that school
-SMOE upholds their contract, but dealing with the head office is most people's biggest complaint. Luckily that happens only about 1 time a year.
-21 business days of vacation, plus chances for more, plus all the national holidays |

They're all a gamble... maybe not so much as hogwans though...
I think my school is a good place to work if you like a lot of free time. Co-workers are nice and I was told that the students were rude so I expected attitudes from them and they've actually shown me the opposite. I'll actually miss them the most out of everyone.
Teachers don't pressure you. They let you teach what you want however you want and they stay close by to translate, discipline, support, team teach... whatever.
Those are good reasons to give them a try... if you're determined to start a public school job as early as the beginning of February.
Unfortunately, I can't speak so highly of the administration. |
