How did you learn to swear in Korean? The shibal's and keseki's I can find in almost any movie but, i'm talking about other bad words. Did your girlfriend's or boyfriend's teach you any? Do you find that many Koreans won't teach you because they think you will use it against them or other Koreans? Personally that's what I find. It seems i've heard many times from my wife that she "doesn't know any bad words" in Korean. I really find that difficult to believe. I've told my wife that I would like to know more bad words just in case someone swears at me. At least this way i'd know what they're saying, and not just sit there smiling saying kum-sumnida. Wink

"yaht, mo ga raut" - an insult said while offering someone toffee.

An older local on Ulleungdo taught me that. He'd spent over two decades in LA so his English was pretty good. He mentioned it as something I can do to a good friend only, in jest, but then backtracked and said it might be too insulting for that.

Two weeks later I visited a Korean friend in Tongyeong, handed him some Ulleungdo taffy and said the expression: he was offended at first, then laughed, then was hurt a bit thereafter. In his 10-year-developed New York accent he responded: 'Why would you do that man. Come on, that ain't nice." Laughing

Swearing in public to someone can be a criminal offense. Not joking..it can get you in big trouble. Some swear words in Korean can be real serious. Test it and see what happens. Laughing

Actually, I've heard that sentence used in English and in French (the person didn't use the word 'nipple' in English).

I'm guessing saying 'puppy dog' isn't one of them because it sometimes seems like it's every other word that comes out of some guys' mouths.

My first ever Korean language lesson:

gf: in Korean, the verb "to eat" is "먹다"
YF: 먹다. Got it.
gf: Polite present tense is 먹어요.
YF: Change 다 to 어요. 먹어요. Got it.
gf: We are good friends, so we can talk informal... we don't need 요.
YF: Okay, no 요. Just 먹어. Got it.

Minutes later, walking down the street:
YF: (see 호떡 vendor) 자기야, 호떡 먹어?
gf: No, I'm full.
YF: (see 떡볶이 vendor) 자기야, 떡볶이 먹어?
gf: No, I'm full.
YF: (see 호박엿 vendor) 자기야, 엿 먹어?
gf: Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad (string of angry Korean I didn't understand)
YF: What? Embarassed

I had a few adult students in my first year or two that taught me some choice language. Not my style to use it unprovoked, but I suppose there's a time when knowing that chickenhead is a pretty foul word in Korean might come in handy. Razz
